116 diesel question

What kind of mileage does a 116 diesel achieve? I am assuming the only model was the 300SD???

Fred

Bonehead will tell you positively what the W116 gets, but, we put him to bed already.

IIRC it does about the same as the W126............27 mpg overall.

sounds right. i've had two w116 300SD cars and the one got over 30 mpg but it was a 1 owner mint condition w/ 160k so it was either babied or my math sucks! the other one was closer to the 25-27 number

I used to get a consistant 27mpg.

116 300SD production years were '78 (rarest year), '79 and '80.

'78 and '79 are listed as having 110hp, while the '80 is listed at 120hp. Don't know how this plays out in reality.

'78 and '79 have 120mph speedos, '80 is an 85mph unit.

Sunroofs are rare on the '80s, common on the previous 2 years.

'80s usually have the passenger side mirror, earlier cars it seems to have been an option.

You have a 6.9, so the rest of the usual 116 issues apply.

My old 300SD was my fav among the 5 MB's I've owned. It died of rust.

are you certain of this? i had a '79 and an '80 and they were the same: 120 mph speedo, sunroof and the pass mirror. i wonder if my alleged '80 was really a '79....hmmm (it was an '80 on the title though)

Pretty Certain. My current '80 has the 85 mph speedo and s0 has every other '80 car I have seen. Even an '80 6.9 has the 85mph'er.

I've seen one '80 with a sunroof, so they do exist, jsut seem pretty rare. Various explanations have been put forth.

Mirrors and speedos can be sawpped easily.

A 6.9 with a 85 mph speedo..... Pretty silly, isn't it?

My 300SD gets about 26-27 on the highway, noticeably less around town, because I have a very heavy foot.

I average 24-25 mpg on a 50/50 city highway mix of spirited driving.
