Seattle man pays speeding Minnesota ticket in pennies

The Associated Press

MOORHEAD, Minn. – A man ticketed for speeding thought he'd get even by paying his fine with 12,000 pennies.

But the judge had the final word by making him wait for the change to be counted.

"If the person is mad at the cop, why take it out on court administration?" said Clay County District Judge John Pearson. "They're punishing the wrong people."

Rather than count the small garbage can full of pennies by hand, Court Administrator Jan Cosette took them to the bank, where they were put in a counting machine. She returned with $120 in cash and some extra pennies, which were given to the Seattle man, who waited in the courthouse.

He was cited for driving 70 mph in a 55 mph zone March 5.

I've paid fines in pennies before....

Pennies are legal US currency...and they can not refuse payment in US currency.

But thats been a long time and I was mighty ticked off at the time too.

Why would a guy think that he shouldn't be fined for going 15 mph over? If you want to speed, fine. If you get caught, shut up and take it like a man.

he paid...maybe the cop was being an unbearable SOB....I have seen that too many times before.

Or maybe the guy was on steroids. :D I've heard that can generate some attitude.

Needless to say I won.

They will no longer accept payment in pennies where I live/work. Too many people tried to do the same thing they made a local rule prohibiting such payment. Now on to the nickels...

Good for him. Kinda dumb the judge blames the cops, the cops blame the courts for making the laws, it seems like nobody believes in speed limits, yet they stay, and provide invaluable services to the public. If the judges/cops werent being paid for traffic matters, would they need the extra money from the tickets?

My friend got a BS parking ticket at school. Basicaly the cop saw a nice shiney MB and thought hmm here is a chance to make $50.

He paid the ticket in pennies, it pissed the people at the campus police station off but so what.

Everyone should pay tickets in pennies. :D
