Belief in Aliens?????????

I started this thread/poll to coincide with the "belief in God" thread because I think they are both very sensitive topics and are somewhat related. However, I don't think we'll have any fights break out on this one!

I believe in life on other planets due to our vast and supposedly still expanding universe. Plus the FACT that my dad as well as about 200 other people in Illinois in the 70's seen something amazing on their morning commute. My dad said he saw a grayish-black flying disk about 200 feet off the ground, about 100 feet in diameter slowly move across the highway. It hovered there with no sound being made by the object for about 10 seconds. By this time hundreds of people were outside of their car including my father and his brother. Suddenly the object shot through the sky at amazing speed and disappeared in less than a second!!! Just to let you know, this is no bedtime story. It was in the news. I asked my dad if this could be some new secret Skunk Works spy plane we don’t know about yet. BTW: He’s a pilot.. He said there’s no way that what he saw could have possibly come from this planet. As for dad and I; we both believe in other beings outside this world. I have seen one thing myself that was strange in the sky but I was the only one who seen it and I’m not even sure if I was just “seeing things”. However, my dad’s honest testimony is good for me. Anyway, what do you guys think of all this extraterrestrial mumbo jumbo??????
Adam

Of course I do. It will be extremely arrogant to think we are the only one. According to Einstein, the probability of just ONE planet having intelligence life form (not necessarily as advanced as we are) exits just in our own galaxy is 10 to the power of 23 times. When you look at the number of galaxies out there......you get the point. By the way, Milky Way is a relatively small galaxy comparing to others.

What he said. Odds are against us being alone. Besides, that would be a HUGE waste of space if no one else is out there.

But when you consider the age and size of the universe, the odds that these aliens traversed the huge distances involved at the same blink in time that we exist on this planet seems like a long shot.

Is this thread an attempt to explain the existence of Michael Jackson?

If you are devoutly religious, aliens don't exist, never did, never will!

A lot of the UFO sighting folks are just nutjobs who have been living in the desert for too long or taking too much acid or something, and I think the same of most people with "alien abduction" stories.

HOWEVER.....

I FIRMLY believe that we are not alone in this universe. Considering the incomprehensible size of our universe, and the possibility that others like it exist as well..... there HAS to be more than just us.

Have we been contacted or visited by them? Not likely. At our current stage of development and evolution, we would have little to offer to life forms that are advanced enough to be able to traverse such incredible distances, other than just being a "curiosity".

Even if one ignores all the other likelihoods involved, consider this: The law of probability make it practically impossible for our planet to be the only place with life.

This goes a long way toward explaining one of the most famous (previously) unexplained incidents -- the lights over Phoenix.

I firmly believe aliens have visited us. They took one look at our "civilization" and left at warp factor 12 after putting up a force field at the edge of the solar system to keep us from escaping.

I have never seen a UFO, but I'm thinking at least some of the reports should be credible. Anyway, the thought that there is another civilization that could be millions of years more advanced than we are is just fascinating. Just look at how much technology has changed on our planet in only a 100 years. I'm an astronomy fan, have a couple telescopes and know a thing or two about the universe. I agree with others that the probability that we are alone in the universe is just about nill. But I still only voted for "There May Be life On Other Planets, I'm not Sure Though" because I have no confirmed evidence.

Don't forget to consider the difference between "existance" and "alive". There may be millions of civilizations existed but not alive. I read it somewhere by one of the astronomers, Hawkins maybe, said that when a civilization reaches a certain level of its development, it tends to self-destruct. Take for example, humans. We have plenty of nukes to blow ourselves to kingdom come. Therefore, there may have been civilizations closed by in our own galaxy, but they beat each to death eons ago. Long before we got off the trees and walked up straight. So they existed, but not to our knowledge. Unless we stumble into their monuments and what not.
