Warning: If you use Firefox.

BACKUP YOUR BOOKMARKS!

They can disappear!!!

And I'm not talking about when you get "struck" in a "profile" - I mean disappear for good.

Pete

P.S. If any pros out there know how to get them back I'll buy you a beer! (Ohhhh... here's to hoping there is a soul that knows how.) I was just on the Firefox forum and it looks like this a "bug" (gee, great, thanks for telling me NOW!)

Pete, I know this might be too late, but where do the bookmarks live?

I've been attempting to find the bookmarks for six months with no luck.

No, fortunately, I don't have the same problem.

But, I don't back up my programs and I have a suspicion that they reside in the program somewhere.

Do a search on a that forum, they tell you how to back up the bookmarks. Lots of good that does me NOW that I don't have an bookmarks left!

I raved about Firefox... now, to be honest. Junk.

Bookmarks are stored in a file named "bookmarks.html" in the profiles folder(s). Since it's HTML, it can be viewed with a web browser. More about this at the site to which GottaDiesel linked earlier - see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_FAQs.

On my machine, I noticed "bookmarks.bak" in the same folder. If I had some serious trouble, I'd take a look at that file to see if it could save me some grief.

Thanks to GottaDiesel for the warning, too, as I hadn't heard of it being a problem. I know I've exported my bookmarks occasionally to use them on a different machine, so I wouldn't have to go back to nothing, but I haven't been backing them up with any regularity. Really simple, seeing as how it lives there in a plain old HTML file.

I should do this, of course, just as I would do it for any other application data that matters to me. Stuff happens.

John, I tried to take a look at the bookmarks by opening this file with the browser. However, it doesn't allow you to view the bookmarks directly. It simply states that this is the file where the bookmarks reside.

Doesn't give me a real warm feeling.

Brian,

It lets me look at it, however, there are none of my bookmarks in it, just the default junk. I'm running a search for ALL files with the word "bookmark" in them...

We'll see...

I hate the thought of going back to MS IE.

I used the Windows search function to find all of the bookmarks files. I'm not sure, but I think that exactly what you see there might have something to do with whether Firefox is active when the search is performed. There are a number of bookmarks files on my system, but only two of them (one .html, one .bak) are ones that show my personal bookmarks - others contain just the default ones.

From the search results window, I can right-click on a filename and select "open" from the context menu to view it (opens the file in Firefox). If Firefox is already open, I can select the filename in the results window, then drag it onto the Firefox window. Either of these methods lets me view bookmarks.bak, too.

For what it's worth, I can also view the bookmarks files with Internet Explorer and Nvu (HTML editor).

I did the same thing. Every time I open the file in Firefox, or with Explorer, I get the message that you see above (post #11). I don't get any bookmarks. I can't believe the bookmarks are in this folder if they are not visible.

Brian, I suspect that you're still looking only at a default bookmarks file. I have some of those on my system, too. If, in Firefox, you currently do see all of "your" bookmarks, then try this:

1. From the "Bookmarks" menu, select "Manage Bookmarks..." - should take you to the Bookmarks Manager.

2. From the "File" menu in the Bookmarks Manager, select "Export..."

3. Specify a convenient location and give the file a descriptive name.

4. Try viewing this HTML file in Firefox, IE, etc.

In my case, the file exported has the same bookmarks in it as the copy of bookmarks.html that's in my profile folder.

yeah i lost them a while ago.. you guys need to dowload updated to the browser..

the bookamark files are here: C:\Documents and Settings\****\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\vm0wl1kr.default

where **** is your profile; there are two files there: bookmarks.html and bookmarks.bak... of course you can look at the html file.. the other is only readable by the browser.. simply copy them onto a disc or send those files to yourself (email) that way they are always avalable and on line..

in Netscape they are basically on the same path (mozilla-->netscape) if anyone is using it
