Howdy All,
Spelling don't count. Met Wylie Gustifson of Wylie and the Wild West several times. Michael Martin Murphy several times. Suzy Bogguss a number of times. And Mike Love of the Beach Boys. I think there were some others. And since Eric brought up Hendrix I worked in a resturant and Jimi's cousin Jerry worked tere for a little bit. Geez we sure are digging deep :-)

I meet a lot of famous musicians in my day to day life. Guitarists especially, but violinists, pianists, etc.

I was in the airport on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands in the late '80's, and literally bumped into Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin coming out of the Men's room. You know how people say, "I shook hands with so and so, and I'll never wash my hands again," well, I went in the same urinal as RP and I'll never wash my......!!

True story, except for that last part.

Billy Bragg, Michael Stipe, and all of the Trash Can Sinatras... doubt those names mean much to most folks, though, except Michael Stipe.

I rode in an airport hotel shuttle van with the Turtles once. They were in Milwaukee to play a private gig, and in an incredibly foul mood. Didn't help that all the flight attendants were in the back of the van belting out "Happy Together" - off key.

not a musician but I met Richard Petty once. When I was a kid I used to pal around with his nephew. One day I went over to his house as this guy was leaving, he said introduced me "This is my uncle Richard" I shook his hand, said nice to meet you, he hopped in a Firebird convertable and pulled out. It took about 5 minutes and then it dawned on me "your uncle Richard, you mean Richard Petty?" I didn't make the connection.

Once removed

I had a brief fling with the ex-girlfriend of the bass player for Jane's Addiction. My best friend from high school used to deal heroin to lots of Seattle grunge guys, including Mr. Cobain--in fact, rumor has it he may have been the source Kurt used for his very last fix.

I guess my most memorable was Curtis Mayfield -- he used to visit my place of employment. Nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. He'd stop and talk to anyone who approached him -- he was genuine, humble and truly grateful for his success. I remember one time this grungy, doper-lookin' white dude recognized and approached him. The guy claimed he was a musician with a struggling band, blah, blah, blah. Curtis talked to this guy for about 15 minutes, then gave him his business card and actually invited him down to his studio. This was all before the terrible accident that left him wheelchair bound and which eventually led to his demise. If anyone wants proof that life isn't fair, this is it.

Oh, I almost forgot, Tracy Nelson and her band picked me up hitchhiking once in Des Moines and dropped me off at my door in Boulder, CO. Best ride I ever had!

I was at a small after party at a friends house with James Cotton and his band in Northern NY (Potsdam) ~1984.... Those guys are marvelous muscians and 100%NUTS when it comes to partying....Honestly? They were scaring me....

I've met David Grisman and Bill Graham on separate occaisions...Bromberg? Cool! I love his lyrics and saw him Perform Last Fall in Camden Maine....

Oh yeah I got to shake Stevie Rays' hand after a show in Poughkeepsie NY (The Chance).....I literally couldn't speak I was totally agape and just stuck my hand out..he kind of nodded and shook my hand. It was after the show and he was SOAKED hat to scarf to boots with sweat. he played %110 from note one. I have never seen anything like it since. RIP SRV

These aren't classic but....I met Eve6 a few years ago at the Fillmore in SF. SR-71 at a small club "Slim's". We were talking to most of the band who was waiting around since their lead singer was puking for about half an hour since seafood and countless mixed drinks don't go well together when performing. Saw Dan Akroyd at Poquito Mas eating a burrito least year. Does that count being the other half of the Blues Brothers?

Small stretch: A good friend of mine and his girlfriend were travelling in Ireland a few years ago after college and waited near the studio where U2 was rehearsing at regularly one evening. Adam, Larry, The Edge (had some sort of C-Class) left the studio first in their cars. Bono leaves the studio in a W220 S-Class and starts to drive off. He sees my friends and two other fans standing on the side of the street and stops. He backs up rolls down the window and says....."hello....do you need a lift?". My friends nearly crap their pants and say sure! They were excstatic being offered a chauffered ride by their favorite musician! (They were staying at a hostel a few miles away).

I think it's pretty cool that as big as U2 is he still spends time to talk to fans (albeit a bit much ) and manage the efforts for Africa.

I have read several accounts of Bono doing that... one was by a Spin writer who was leaving the studio with Bono. He gave a few fans a lift and played the demo CD of the upcoming album for them, and asked what they thought. How cool would that be?

I really admire Bono's work for Africa. He really puts his $ where his mouth is, and the fact that he meets with leaders regardless of their politics speaks volumes for the man. While the Coldplay guy is snubbing Blair by refusing to meet with him, Bono is talking Bush into sending $ to Africa. Now THAT'S how it's done. And he (Bono) generally refuses to badmouth Bush, which is refreshingly effective.
