Used for a long time by many Pacific Islanders, said to have a calming effect, a relaxant. Very popular in parts of Micronesia (where it's referred to as sakau), not the best-tasting drink from what I've heard.
Supposedly similar effects to alcohol, except the drinkers don't go into a stupor - they're more mentally capable after drinking kava-kava than after drinking alcohol.

I tried it as an herbal tea. It didn't do much for me. Maybe I didn't make it strong enough. It might work better in capsule form I don't know. If you get it in capsule form make sure that it is a standardized brand.
