Battling the varmints
 

Even after riveting aluminum sheeting inside our 'heavy duty' plastic garbage cans, the varmints still gnawed through and left a big mess to be cleaned up the next morning. So we bought metal cans, but they learned how to pull off the lids, so their picnics under the moonlight continued almost unabated. Then I got bungee cords to strap over and through the lids figuring that would be the ultimate blow against these critters (besides a shotgun of course), but guess what...

So here is my latest arsenal in the battle against the varmints:

What kind of varmits ya got in Rockville? Bears? :D Thats a heavy duty latch ya got on the cans....

I thought there was no room for varmits in Rockville! The neighbors dogs getting into it?

I'm gonna guess they are racoons....or as we say in Manhattan..."coons"....(-:

Another idea is to have your cans underground with a steel lid covering the whole they are in....

Dig hole for cans;
seal it with cement;

Keep cans in holes; and have a foot operated steel cover to open them...
(sort of like on a kitchen garbage pail.)

I use a .223 to blast woodchucks around my property. Works damn good.

I haven't seen them, but most likely racoons or anything else that have opposable thumbs. Tho something got trapped in the shed and left a pile of sawdust on the floor trying to gnaw its way out. I didn't know 'coons have sharp teeth that can go thru wood. Maybe theres rats too. I laid down some poison a few weeks ago just in case.

Even with one of the Greyhounds nailing 2 rats in a week we have enough varmints to keep 2 ferel cats, 2 Greys & 6 Salukis busy. And for the varmints that know how to stay away from the dogs I am going to invest in a pellet gun. The shotgun is a little much.

I use the 1906 Marlin pump.

No accuracy needed....close will do. :D

Might be coons but Rockville is so full of people I didn't think there would be any coons left. Thats why I said the neighbors dog.

Sorry...I'm not a city boy so i don't know. Coons run around in the city too?? How about possum? Skunk?

Not many skunks, but plenty of foxes, possums, and too many squirrels and deer (including 1 albino). We are in the leafy side of Rockville that has no sidewalks or street lights. Public water and sewer is just getting here.

That puts you out near Olney MD then.........A co-worker of mine lives out in your neck of the woods.

Actually on the other side, closer to that snob village that starts with P. and is named after a river.

Whats up with the albino deer? I thought you lived far enough away from Calvert Cliffs. :D

I've seen a few albinos here as well.

Also black squirrels. Tree rats is what I call 'em.
