Coulter lays an egg
Coulter peddled Katrina falsehoods on Fox, but the truth sneaked in -- "I don't know what the details are" mediamatters.org As a guest on the September 8 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, right-wing pundit Ann Coulter made several false statements pertaining to Hurricane Katrina and the relief efforts taking place in its aftermath. Coulter claimed it is "manifestly true" that no one anticipated the levee breeches, then admitted she doesn't know the "details" When co-host Alan Colmes cited President Bush's claim, made during a September 1 interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer, that he "didn't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees," Coulter interjected: "That's manifestly true." But after Colmes objected to her assertion, Coulter admitted she actually did not know "what the details are about this." In fact, Bush's claim that no one "anticipated the breach of the levees" is categorically false. The St. Petersburg Times reported on August 30 that National Hurricane Center director Max Mayfield "talked about the force of Katrina during a video conference call to President Bush at his ranch in Crawford, Texas" on August 28. The Washington Post quoted Mayfield on September 6: "They knew that this one was different. ... I don't think [Federal Emergency Management Agency director] Mike Brown or anyone else in FEMA could have any reason to have any problem with our calls. ... They were told ... We said the levees could be topped." Moreover, just hours after the storm passed on Monday, August 29, Brown confirmed that the potential for catastrophic flooding remained. In an interview with Brown, NBC Today co-host Matt Lauer noted, "In New Orleans, in particular, they're worried about the levees giving way or the canals not holding, and they're worried about toxic runoff." Brown responded that even though the storm had weakened, there was still a 15- to 20-foot storm surge causing "the water out of Lake Pontchartrain and the Gulf and the Mississippi [to] continue to converge upon Louisiana." Brown added, "So we're still ready for a major disaster." Coulter demanded that MoveOn.org "actually help out" with the Katrina disaster, overlooking the group's national evacuee housing program In response to co-host Sean Hannity's claim that "prominent Democrats" had "politicized" the disaster in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, Coulter complained: "MoveOn.com [sic: MoveOn.org] is down protesting outside the White House today. How about putting together some evacuee bags? How about actually helping out?" In fact, MoveOn.org has done more than simply protest the Bush administration's response to Hurricane Katrina. In the wake of the disaster, the organization mounted a national emergency housing drive that, the group reports, has volunteered to provide more than 250,000 beds to those left homeless by the storm and flood, as the weblog Think Progress noted in response to Coulter. Coulter falsely suggested that Barry Lynn has no church To further argue that liberal groups have not sufficiently aided in relief efforts in Louisiana and Mississippi, Coulter stated she would like to see a "breakdown" of "how much churches are contributing versus, say, Barry Lynn's church." When Hannity asked her what church she was talking about, Coulter explained that it was a "joke," suggesting that Lynn, the executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, was not associated with an actual church. In fact, Lynn is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ (UCC). Moreover, the UCC created the "Hope Shall Bloom" Hurricane Katrina Fund in the immediate aftermath of the catastrophe. The church recently increased its fundraising goal for disaster relief to $3 million. From the September 8 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes: COLMES: Well, no one is blaming the hurricane on him. I think it's the response. And there's enough blame to go around, but you know when he says, "I didn't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees," And then Brown gets on -- COULTER: That's manifestly true. COLMES: Thursday -- well not when he said it -- and says that he didn't know the evacuees were stranded at the Superdome until earlier that day. COULTER: Look, I don't know what the details are about this. [...] HANNITY: Every prominent Democrat has politicized this before we even searched every home for dead bodies. COULTER: Oh, yeah, and they're down -- Moveon.com is down protesting outside the White House today. How about putting together some evacuee bags? How about actually helping out? And you know, speaking of that, I think, you know, I'd like to see a breakdown at the end of this -- how much churches are contributing versus, say, Barry Lynn's church. HANNITY: What church? COULTER: Right, that was a joke. HANNITY: Did he actually have one? COULTER: Versus, you know, MoveOn.com [sic] with their putting their protest signs together. How much has George Soros given? How much has Sean Penn given? — J.K. Posted to the web on Monday September 12, 2005 at 11:11 AM EST |

wooo-wooo, he said Coulter!
ED KENNEDY'S PRIVATE PARTS: PART I August 31, 2005 Sen. Teddy Kennedy has demanded that the Bush administration waive attorney-client privilege and release internal memos John Roberts worked on while in the solicitor general's office 15 years ago, all of which were supposed to be held in the deepest confidence. Apparently, Kennedy thinks public officials have no right to keep even their attorney-client communications secret. This surprised me because the senator is such a strong advocate of the (nonexistent) "right to privacy." And not just in the way most drunken, Spanish quiz-cheating, no-pants-wearing public reprobates generally cherish their own personal right to privacy. I mean privacy in the abstract. I know as much about the "right to privacy" as I know about any other made-up, nonexistent right, but I would have thought that any "right to privacy" would protect confidential attorney-client conversations at least as much as, say, abortions in public buildings. But I'll have to defer to the expert. Consequently, applying the principle even-handedly to members of the executive branch as well as the legislative branch, I demand that Kennedy immediately waive all attorney-client privilege relating to his communications with his lawyer after he drove Mary Jo Kopechne off the bridge at Chappaquiddick. It's time to clear up, once and for all, the many questions that have swirled around Kennedy since Chappaquiddick. Oops — "swirled" may have been a poor choice of words there. How about "floated"? Nope. "Surfaced"? Oooh — even worse, in terms of irony. "Come to light"? OK, now I'm just being obtuse. "Beset"? Yes, that's better. Youth is no defense. John Roberts was 26 years old when he wrote the documents that Kennedy demands on behalf of the Senate. Kennedy was 36 when he drove Mary Jo Kopechne off a bridge. If the Senate needs to know what Roberts thought about the law at age 26, then the Senate certainly needs to know what Kennedy thought about the law at age 36, when he drowned a girl and then spent the rest of the evening concocting an alibi instead of calling the police. This isn't a "rehash" of Chappaquiddick; it's never been hashed. The Senate needs to know whether Kennedy was guilty of manslaughter. How else can the Senate be expected to carry out its constitutional duty to expel Kennedy unless Kennedy makes these key documents available? We'll pick them up in the same van we send to collect John Kerry's military records and Bill Clinton's medical records. While we wait, here's my guess as to what those attorney-client conversations sounded like, based on the facts in Leo Damore's book "Senatorial Privilege: The Chappaquiddick Cover-Up": Interview with client Teddy Kennedy, July 19, 1969: Teddy: May I approach the bench? Lawyer: It's not a bench, Teddy. It's my desk. And no, you can't have another Chivas Regal. Teddy: (Hiccup) Lawyer: Let's start at the beginning. Teddy: I'm going to say you were driving. Lawyer: No, you are not saying I was driving. Teddy: OK, someone in your family was driving. Lawyer: They weren't even in Massachusetts that week. Can we move on? Why didn't you call the police after the accident, Teddy? Teddy: I had to protect my political career, obviously. But this wasn't just about me! I was thinking about future drunk, philandering U.S. senators who may or may not have just drowned some chick they met at a party. Lawyer: But what about Mary Jo — Teddy: Yes, precisely! How would it look if I, a United States senator, were driving off to a secluded beach at midnight with a beautiful, nubile female after a private party? How would that look? Lawyer: But Mary Jo was still alive for two hours — Teddy: Did I mention my wife was pregnant? You think I should have reported the accident now, Mr. Smartypants? Lawyer: She was trapped in that car, struggling to breathe! Teddy: Do you know that two of my brothers were assassinated? Lawyer: She was still alive! You could have saved her! Teddy: Yeah, and say goodbye to my presidential ambitions. There was the future of the country to consider — as well as the future of the Chivas Regal company and all their employees. I am a Kennedy. I have a divine right to the presidency. I had to put that ahead of my lawyer's conscience. Anyway, Mary Jo was driving. Lawyer: Teddy, we can't say Mary Jo was driving. Teddy: What if some phony witness claimed that the driver stopped to ask for directions. Wouldn't that prove it was a woman driving? Lawyer: But what about the witnesses? Teddy: We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Hey, what's so funny? Did I just say something funny? To be continued ... In all honesty, I don't care about Teddy at all. It's just that ol' Kirk invoked the Coulter response.
See, I take it as a challenge whenever the loonie left goes off about Coulter to supply them with some wit and Wisdom of Ms Coulter. It makes them really froth and quake, which I enjoy. Easy sport, like fishing with rotenone. Best, most reliable method for making floaters out of suckers (a species of fish). B |

very interesting dual betwixt the Roberts "documents" and the kennedy "documents".
It did make me think of documents though. I have been wondering for the last few days to myself what the documents were that Sandy Berger destroyed. As NSA to Clinton heading to the National Archives to destroy things just before a 9/11 commision wants testimony regarding what that administration had done about terrorism... It begs many unanswered questions. I guess that will never be answered evidently. The punishment for the offense is so very offensive to me though. It shows the power of teflon by proxy. Even with the increase of the fine from $10K to $50K because the judge thought he deserved more punishment. The suspension of the security clearance for 3 years is just damn insulting. No way no how should he EVER get a clearance again. He should have spent some time in jail. It's very irksome as well to see that it was covered briefly by the media with only a small story that went away within a couple of hours.

But, damn Teddy to Hell, now we have to let Dubya and cronies get away with everything because of that incident on a dark, narrow bridge, what 20, 30 years ago? Well, them's the rules boys, better pack it in and go home. Feudal landlord days are back again. All hale the Republicans!
