So anyway...second hand only :(
Possibly a "baby" Ducati 620 monster (2 valve/ AIR cooled), a /5 or /6 R6 or R7...........perhaps even an R9.
Any thoughts out there? I have been riding "forever", however mostly dirt bikes...........LARGE and small.......I have ridden "BIG TWINS" (limited tho).........Hyabussa rocket........Suzuki 2 stroke triples (various sizes).......
I have never OWNED a road bike. I live in an apartment......I do have winter storage.....I am POOR.

Depends on how much you are willing to spend and what kind of riding you plan on. The Duc may suit you fine but I suspect you will be wanting more power. What is a /5, /6? I know what an R6/R7 is but what is an R9?

Insurance may be an issue also. Unless you just have liability stay away from the sportbikes.

How much do you want to spend?
How are you going to ride it?
Do you work on your own bikes?
Do you plan on reselling down the road or keep for a while?

What about a smaller cruiser? A nice rebel 450 is going for 2,000, and a nice rebel 250 is going for about 3/4 of that

How about a DIY - Yamaha 650 w real kick starter+"Street Tracker" kit+ a couple hundred hours and $1,000 or so and WaaLa - Build it for 2k ride it and sell it for 5k - if I only could find the time :D http://www.managemoney.org/stIII.gif

Man, those are heavy wheels and disks. Been there, done that. Lots of Hi-Po parts around. The 80's solution. Big power, big unsprung weight, big noise. You can name it widowmaker. Pretty good everywhere but uncouth as hell. Just looking for trouble and a cane down the road.

Since you are comfortable on dirt why not look at a big single like a klr650 or so. A small parallel twin in a scrambler style would be cool as well. I like the supermotorad type of bikes. Excellent riding position and easy to look around. Lots of torque to squirt through traffic and light enough to bring into your apartment :)

Honda Hawk 650GT from the late 80's is a nice small
V twin.

Stay away from the Suzuki 2 stroke triples and get a Yamaha
RD instead , if you want a 70's 2 stroke.

Yes, I'm getting the bug to resume my own motorcycle shopping. I wasn't going to do it until this house sold and I was set up in the next home, but heck with that. At this rate I'm going to miss the fall riding season!

I think in lieu of one of my 'dream bikes', in the interests of economy and practicality, I'm just going to find a cheap SV650 to ride for a year or two.

The Suzuki 2-stroke triples ran great. They were just a little heavy that is all. I had a 550 and it ran like snot. Although I do agree that the RD is a much better bike.

I had the baby brother to the water buffalo. The 550 was a screamer. After I had it for a while I went to look at the 750 (water buffalo) I found a super looking low mileage one but the guy wanted alot of $$$ for it.

It was a weird bike. A liquid cooled two stroke more suitable to touring than scratching. Definately one of a kind. I had an H2 for a while but couldn't recommend it even as a nostalgia bike. The early rz350's, with the small fairing, would make a nice bike.

I used to have an RD350 for a while....buddie fell assleep on night and it a bridge embuttment........trashed the front end (pushed what was left of wheel into the engine.)......he was drunk..only had bruises, sold it to me for $50...neightor had a friend who raced those and sold me a complete stock front end tires to handgrips for $50 ( he ran inverted forks)

ran it for a while and traded it in for $750 off a new in th ecrate 550 Maxim (that cost $1,500) ...ran that a year sold it and bought the Harley I still own...

Where to ride is the big question. Totally self-absorbed drivers today make the roads unsafe. I put about ten miles on my last road bike, it just wasn't fun anymore. Maybe one of those bikes like a motocrosser with street tires and lights would make me want to chance it.
