Any hi speed ISP suggestions
 

Looking to switch from my cable dsl isp; too much $$$$....
ANy suggestions for a new hi speed ISP?

I do have modem for cable or DSL....

DSL is getting cheaper, it depends on your area and what they are offering, but the speed is not the highest speed they have. those you have to pay for.

For me $50.00 a month for cable that runs from 3.0 mbits and up at all times, is well worth it.

Generally, the best deals are for new subscribers, but availability will depend on what providers are in your "neck of the woods." I find that a lot of local ISPs offer decent rates for DSL service since the telephone wire is much more deregulated than cable TV wire.

If you can go cable do it, yea a little pricey. Although first year they almost give it to you. The speed diff vs DSL is mind numbing.
I have customers with DSL, it's a pain downloading big files, and connecting to their site remotely is noticably slower than those with Cable.

Normal DSL MIGHT get you 756kb down, 380kb ish up. Probably 256 just up, one customer has Biz class 1meg down 512 up, still pokey.

I'm guaranteed 3 or 4 (I think they just changed it to 4) MEG bidirectional, and I've seen downloads that appear to exceed the 10MEG max. I normally see 6 to 7 MEG, so I get 4x minimum and actually run 8x.

It has been all but perfect, I've only had 2 brief outages in a year, one I had to unplug the modem, the other was a blip.
Although the iDSL I had was also very solid.

I've been with DSL extreme for about 3 years now. Had one down time for about a 1/2 day in that period. Prices seem fair compared to others. I think they are nationwide but it's worth giving them a looksee.

I don't know what planet you guys are on but DSL has much better speed than cable, unless you have fiber optic cable of course.

Do a true speed test on regular cable at peak time and see how fast it really is.

My DSL is 6000/1500 and its like that 24/7 I'd like to see regualr cable top that.......oops for 44.99 a month.

Most of the time cable is a shared connection so if you have a couple gamers on the block you're going to see slow downs and lag. If could get Comcast cable I would probably go the cable route or anything that is fibre optic. Cable was to unreliable for my needs so I switched to dsl despite the cost. On paper cable looks better but in reality dsl is consistent.

I havent had any hint of any kind of slowdown on my cable ever... at any time of day.

You're blessed with big city cable, they have the infastructure to provide the bandwidth.

I would stick with cable if possible. I have cable, and there has only been one incident with the servide, but it was my fault. I have seen on TV that SBC is offering a deal on DSL where you pay 19.99 a month for 1 year. I thought about it, but I still like my cable internet.

Why are you associating dial-up with DSL? The only thing they have in common is the phone line.


Here's some advice ask your neigbors what they use, some areas have crappy dsl and others have crappy cable some have both of each.

No. I was saying that 7 years of dial up made the switch to cable even better than going from no internet to cable internet.

I don't know about you, but have you ever tried to d/l a huge file over dialup? Downloading 3 megs on my old MSN connection took over 10 minutes. On cable it takes a whole 15 seconds!

They didn't have large files when I had dial up. The last time I used dial up was in the 90's.

I had dial up until 2002. Then, we finally spend the 50$ to get the modem and install kit, and since then, I am happy to say I will never go back to dial up.

If you are claiming 6Meg/1.5Meg for 44.99. pls. DSL tops at 3 meg.

DSL is also distance dependent, even if I wanted it the best I can get is 144k, and I was paying 120 mth for that (yes twice a good modem conn, although the best I ever got with a modem was 20k).

Yes cable is shared, so is yours once it hits the POP (Point of Presence).

So for 39.99 month, once discounts are dropped (About 15/mth right now) I get 3 to 10 Meg and I've verified it at various times.

And I can notice the difference between my DSL customers and cable customers. It is VERY noticable.
