Coffee addiction.........

For the last 5 days I have been giving my father caffeine free cuban coffee without his knowledge, trying to preserve his health after a stroke.

I've noticed that he was very lethargic, reserved, kinda down, etc.....

I took him to breakfast this morning and he had the real stuff. In less than an hour his entire disposition has changed. He's outside in the yard, taliking to friends on his cell phone. Changed man.

Has that happened to anyone before?

Yea me, if I don't have my coffee in the morning things get ugly, Mountain Dew won't work it has to be Coffee. I picked it up in the military I think its more psycological than anything because a buddy and I would always find a brew of coffee to keep our spirits up and it always worked.

Also,

I think coffee has undiscovered qualities because it does a lot more for me than just a caffine rush.

You've really got to brew it in a sweety t-shirt to get the full effect.

In other words, you are actually responsible for your problems with your dad, because your actions had him in detox.

We had it with a nasty as sock once we were huddled around a solid fuel cooker to absorb the leftover warmth as a Major walked up to us commenting the he could smell the coffee and wanted some....so we gave it to him the look on his face was like that cop who drank the piss beer on the movie Dumb and Dumber..... He said do you guys like this $hit we told him it was all we had. He invited us to the officers OP's a few days later because he felt sorry for us.

Over in the famous quotes thread (hopefully this will be new to some of you guys) was a great one from Abe Lincoln: (approx)

"If this is tea, please bring me some coffee. But if this is coffee, please bring me some tea."

I've had some coffee like that.

I've experienced the same thing your father did many times. I like coffee...like it a lot, but I went through many phases where I was getting too hyper on it (Seattle espresso scene, 80s and 90s) and then I would get to the point where I had a bad headache starting up around 2 pm if I didn't have it that day.

Major, major headaches when quitting. Excedrin Extra Strength has caffiene in it, and not by accident, I'd bet.

After a few months off of it, I seem to recover my energy w/o coffee use. Peppermint tea is a much more benign stimulant, no downside but less upside. I've been a daily coffee drinker again for about a year. Love/hate relationship.

Oh well, life's a *****, then....

I used to think it was all in his head, that he associated the coffee and smoking as something he thought he needed.

After seing him all glum and listless drinking the decaffinated stuff, I see that he really needs it.

When he was able to, he would make coladas(Appox 6oz) of cuban coffee or more daily. And follow up each time with a cigarette. In addition to the ones he would buy while on the road.

He literally gets bent out of shape if he doesn't see coffee sitting there as soon as he wakes up. Now that I won't allow him to make it of course. He makes way too much of a mess and leaves the stove on, so one of the stipulations I have for him living with me is no cooking. I make it and leave it in a thermos.

I'm not proud of it but I'm the same way my wifes job is to load the coffee maker and if that thing ain't pumpin @ 5:30 I lose it. Never forget about the power of suggestion I sleep until 5:30 it doesn't matter if I go to sleep an hour before that but I'm up at 5:30.......even with day light saving.......figure that one out. Well one day I slept till 9:30 which is the longest I've slept in years that just happens to be the day my coffee maker died. the instant aroma of coffee wakes me up. Last weekend we left a kid in charge of the coffee for duck hunting and he didn't think it was too important and forgot........his ass got lit up and he missed the first hour of duck season shile he went and got our coffee.

That coffee is some powerfull stuff man.
