We are spoiled............

those words dripped from the mouth of a good friend after she became a refugee from Hurricane Wilma.

We've got is so easy, we're not used to struggling for necessities.

In her case, her roof has 3 huge holes in it after Wilma hit Broward county hard.

We were hit hard here in Dade, but not nearly as bad.

I was without power for 36 hours which didn't seem so bad considering I had a generator for food, water, ice, etc.....
I couldn't help but think if all sorts of socail unrest would break out, or if I would have to defend my generator and home during the night

I felt terrible for the people who have nothing and are waiting on line for 2 litres of water and a bag of ice.

For any of you who have been paying attention, Dade county currently has 70 % of it's residents w/o powrer.

Broward more like 95%.

It humbles you to have to wait in line 3 hours to buy gas as I did. Or to be cashless during and after the storm. My fault, I didn't thinki t'd be this bad. Or to see hundreds of people wating to go to Home Depot, buy propane, etc.....

I have a newfound appreciation for people in other countries for whom these inconveniences are a way of life.

We were going to bed early for 3 days because we had no light and my thoughts crept to others in Africa,Central America, etc....who are used to doing without, while we ***** and complain because gas has gone up 40 cents a gallon.

Or because we can't use the AC in the car because we're down to the last bit we have left while we wait for more.

We are truly spoiled, like we are entitled to this way of life.

I hope we all appreciate our way of life. I know I do.

I will now get off my soapbox. :)

I feel the same way when I think of the earliest settlers who came to this country, who had literally nothing but willpower and basic raw materials to survive with. Living 'off the grid' is our natural state of being, yet we are so helpless now without it.

I sincerely appreciate our way of life and all the people who died protecting it.

Was my wifes bday and I took her out for a drink and stuff.

I felt guilty that all around me people were struggling to get gas, ice, etc...
