I mean why on earth would a person pay for a battery operated car with almost zero performance and that needs have their batteries replaced every three/four years when they can have a TDI?

Burned high-sulfur fuel puts sulphur oxides into teh atmosphere. Sulphur oxides, in teh rpesence of water, turn into various acids of sulphur oxides, all of which burn like crazy, some crazier than others.
So, the wacko environmentalists (like me) think that the lesser of two weevils is to forgo the technology and have less sulphuric acid in our lungs.
