Buick Riviera Boattail

I have a hankering for one of these ugly beasts. A green one!

Yes, I almost bought one back in the late 70's. I liked them to. I think they came with the and a 455 engine and FWD, but I don't quite remember now. I went with the '71 T-bird with the 429 cobra jet engine, and could smoke them tires for a hundred yards and got 6 mpg. How times have changed.

I'm thinking these are RWD, but don't quote me on that. I was under the impression that the Riv only got on the Toro/Eldo FWD platform in 1979 when they downsized. I have to imagine that back glass is an expensive piece...

You might be right. That 455 engine would have ripped the FWD apart. I had a black '84 Riv. with the FWD and 6 cyl motor. Nice looking car but that 6 cyl. engine was lame.

I always thought those cars looked cool! BTW, the Toronado was 455/FWD. My friend had one - '72 or '73 I think.

Yep, that's the configuration I was thinking of. Man thats alot of weight on a FWD vehicle.

i used to have a 70 toronado gt.370 h.p. and torque in the 510-520 range and you could roast the front tires all day long, and for about 5000 lbs it was fast.it was the last year of the rotary speedometer that went to 135.i had it coming around for the second time more then once.as for the buick they were rwd until the late 70's.those boatails are actually starting to climb in value, especially the gs models.and as for it being alot of weight on the frontend, its the same drivetrain that was used in the mid 70's gmc motorhomes.so they are a very stout unit.

Those boat tail Riviera Buicks were RWD BOF cars.

Yep. When they first came out I hated their copycat styling. Now it looks pretty cool to me.

They are huge inefficient boats though. I prefer driving a well balanced car with excellent handling, steering and brakes.....like a benz.

My father gave a serious look at the 1972 Riviera when it was new. What killed the deal is that this generation Riv had a very small backseat - very little legroom. What a car, though. In '74, they chopped off the boattail for a more conventional look, and for '77 -'78, the Riv shared much of its bodyshell with the 2-door Buick LeSabre.

As hinted by the picture inscription, this is a 1971 model. The '72 lost the louvered trunklid and the '73 had much of the center bulge in the rear bumper trimmed down, presumably to help it pass the 2.5 MPH rear bumper impact standards legislated for 1973 cars.

I just looked at a 1968 Olds Toronado, which was the first GM car with front wheel drive (in 1966).

This particular '68 was ***** metallic brown with a white interior, and a 455 cubic inch V8.

I can't imagine how a front wheel drive car can handle 500 ft. lbs. of torque.

I don't think it is much of a problem. There is plenty of traction and plenty of wieght to keep it from leaping out from under you!

The Eldo of that era maxxed out at 500 CI.

In the late '90's/early '00's I owned a '66 and a '70 Toronado GT. The '66 featured a 385hp 425ci and the GT a 455ci 400hp. They were FWD, but held up very well. Essentially a TH400 turned 180 degrees. Fun cars, but the FWD wasn't my cup 'o tea. Too bad they weren't RWD.
