Fake AMG's and up badging.

This stuff drives me nuts, is it just me?
I have been looking at W140's for a friend and I see a bunch of them advertised as S320/420/500 AMG for example. When the only AMG part on the car is a set of wheels or a shifter knob. The car isn't an AMG in my book unless it has been to the AMG factory for some official stuff. Now if said S320 had been shipped out to AMG for suspension, brake, and engine work then the owner could call it an AMG.

What also drives me nuts are people slapping S500 badges on S320's. What are they ashamed of it? Whats wrong with an S320? Fake S600's bother me the most, their was one running around town last year. I would have loved to race him with my friends S600 and deflate his ego. It was probably an S320.

I don't know if it is just me but this stuff annoys me. I am more of a de badger myself. If I had an E55 for example it would be wearing E320 4matic badging.

Hattie, just to let you know, when AMG modifications were done at the authorized centers in the United States and Canada in the 80's and 90's before the Daimler buyout, the only requirement that AMG had before the badge could be affixed to the trunklid was that the car have at least two (2) exterior AMG modifications, usually bodykit and wheels.

They do the same thing with M3s and Hondas, Acuras, etc.

I think it depends a lot on if you like to be more modest or a show off. Personally, I say either leave it badged and accurately respresented as it is or debage it if you desire.

I removed the E55 AMG badging from the back of my E55. I like the stealth effect but have thought of adding E320 badging for the shock effect. I can hear them now, "I thought my car was faster than an E320."

What's to understand? A car is an extension of oneself.

What folks do to cars to enhance a perception is no different than wearing colored contact lenses, dyeing your hair blonde or wearing extensions, breast enhancements, shoe lifts to appear taller, tummy-reducing girdles, etc. etc.

People go through WAY more to appear more attractive than they are. Changing a badge on a car has far less impact than the aformentioned...

Search for E300s in on-line listings and see how many renamed 300Es you find. For that matter search the archives.

I think up-badging the cars is pretty silly as well. Poseurs. If anything, I'd do the opposite, or just de-badge it altogether.

Actually, I have a little plan on the back-burner... A friend of mine has a black on black 79 300SD with a blown engine that he's going to sell to me, and we're going to drop a V8 from a 450SE in it, along with the tranny, driveshaft, rear-end, and some other items that must be swapped. But I'm going to leave the "300SD" and "turbodiesel" badges on the trunk. That will catch a few people off guard at the stoplights.

I was considering doing the same thing to my 6.9 but that might be a bit too much.

Someone posted an interesting tale on this forum awhile back. As I recall, a customer brought his newly-purchased pre-owned 600 (I don't remember if it was an S or SL) into the the guys shop, complaining about a lack of power. Shop owner could hear the umistakeable sound of 4.2 liter under the hood. Priceless reaction from the car owner when he learned he had just bought a rebadged 420, at a 600 price!

Happy Motoring, Mark

He deserves it - to dumb to read the title when he purchased.

You mean you can't throw an AMG badge on the back of an old 240D and turn it into a real AMG just like that?

I don't recall exactly what state titled that rebadged 420, (I think it was purchased in California and brought to Seattle) but here in Virginia, titles usually only list the make and body style, so if it says 'MERCEDES 4D SEDAN' on the title, it could mean a 4-cylinder 230 or a 6.9 450SE.

Happy motoring, Mark

Even so, you'd hope that a prospecive buyer would have the sense to pop the hood on a car he's going to be shelling out THAT much money for.

Although, more cash than brains seems to be a fairly common affliction these days.
