I always fuel up with my engine running. Why? becasue if its running I can squeeze another 3 gallons in it that I can't if its off. the fuel circulating with a running engine helps purge the air pocket in the tank....

But then my wife is always in the car with me so I don't have to shut it off when I go in to pay....

I can squeeze up to 3.5 gals with it off so I am not sure what effect it has if it were running but I'll try it sometime

When it first come up to the kneck if its off it stays there....

when its running that level keeps dropping..the last 3 gallons is a slow fill to be sure....becasue its directly related to the speed it drops.

If you keep records of mileage you are sure how much you really have in it...becasue every time it will be full. If you don't keep records then it really doesn't matter.

you obviously don't live where some of us live.. try 5min in 0F or 100F/with high hum. sometime and then we'll talk..

I travel.

From -30f to 120f. It's certainly possible. I've done it. I'll do it again.

Perhaps if you're one of those folks that insist on wearing shorts everyday of the year, it would be difficult, but if you're appropriatly attired for that days weather, you should be able to tough it out. Besides, what good does it do to keep things running for you, you're ouside the car? Inside the car, with doors closed in the wintertime or windows down in the summertime, the temp doesn't change that much.

when it's cold i never kill it. passengers stay warm i know my vehicle will drive away from the station.. most of the time when it's hot i do turn it off though.. well, try to fill up after dark (ozone)

GottaDiesel 11-02-2005 12:38 PM

I turn it off because I don't want the poor bastard that is pumping the gas to have to breath my exhaust. No other reason really.

MedMech 11-02-2005 01:08 PM

If it creates an unnecessary risk to others why do you do it? The fact is that it can cause an explosion! So why do you put the poor sap at risk who abides by the rules by taking a whopping 5 seconds to start your car. If your worried about getting cold how in the hell do you walk in or out of the place your going? I live in a cold state and how fast does the temp drop in five minutes, or how bout them windows during the summer.

Reasons to shut off the engine while fueling:

1. When it's the law, you can be fined if caught. Sorry, this applies to diesels, too!
2. You might want to go back in the car, and when you come back out, produce a static spark at the nozzle. (Not a diesel problem)
3. Some day you might forget to put it in Park and look silly chasing it. :o
4. If your car is stolen, the thief will have a full tank of gas. :)
5. If the right air:fuel mixture from the filler fumes wafts down near your catalytic converter, you can start a fire...

I do with a gasser (religiously)....not with my diesels....unless I am alone.

MedMech 11-02-2005 01:13 PM

I guess I don't have a problem with Diesels running but filling a gasser while running is moronic.

I know what you mean...I've gotten zapped pretty good from static in the winter...some cars are far worse than others. It takes very little to know how that could relate to a major problem if the first thing you grab is the pump nozzle.

gmercoleza 11-02-2005 01:19 PM

If you are talking about discharge static, can't that happen even if the car isn't running?

i think it's a bit comical that you jump on me here but don't mention the thousands of rednecks (yeah, you have your share) smoking their 'baccy while filling up..
