Hmm...I wonder what's next...

TheDon 11-21-2005 09:34 AM

isnt this the same company that was/is building a new hummer plant in lousinanna. seriously american car companies just dont get the idea of fuel effieceny

croftynsteph 11-21-2005 09:36 AM

Well...obviously...the geniuses at GM are thinking the tiny Hummer that gets 14 MPG will sell much better...so the model designation deserves a new plant...hurray for suspect fuel efficiency...

TheDon 11-21-2005 09:43 AM

well ill say this. they've lost me as a future buyer if they are still around.. ill just get another benz

and american cars have no quality. my moms gm equinox was made in canada with parts from china i belive.. how american is that. the paint on the radio bezel is already wearing away in some spots the dash is hard plastic

dont even get me started on my step dads aveo which is made by daewoo in korea. i bet you could float it in the rice paddys

GottaDiesel 11-21-2005 10:35 AM

All True.

Their cars are total crap, but they are still the largest automaker in the world. I wouldn't buy a GM product in a million years, but a Vette would be fun toy.

Oh and if any of my fans are reading this. Yes, I finally bought some GM. Just couldn't sit tight.

So, how well is the job going to get done by people that know they'll be out of a job soon?

Car companies build what people want to buy....not what they don't. High economy cars have been major revenue losers for years.

THey make great stuff thats beating much of the competition as is evidenced by JD Powers................problem is a lot of people want to ignore that. Its not the same company that built the Vega any longer.

Yeppers! I'd bet that Suzuki's best selling cars get far better mileage that GM's best sellers. Why isn't Suzuki a major player???

Took the words right out of my mouth. Also, Honda and Toyota are the only 2 jap auto companys selling good cars, all the others have mediocor quality scores. FYI I was in a Toyota, sorry Lexus RX330h and man what a piece of garbage that was. The dash was the same painted plastic you guys are *****ing about on the American cars and the paint was chipping off on a 15,000 mile vehicle. This was at a competetive drive event and every single one of its competitors felt 3 times as nice as that thing.

Toyota is making money from it Camry 4 banger. The same way Honda is makes money from its Accord 4 banger. These two cars lead to sales in their other units. They are right there in the sweet spot of consumer wants and needs. GM has nothing like these two cars.
Ford and GM are now turning to meet the challenge like oil tankers that get the signal to turn, it has taken them awhile. Too late. People are now set in their opinions. Its harder for a company to build a reputation than it is to lose it. GM spent the 90's losing it with their love affair with SUV's. What happens when oil prices go up, "Never happen!!" they said.. Meanwhile the japanese just kept churning out their boring cars and refining them (hmmm sounds very similar to the 70's doesn't it).
Honda and Toyota may be crap but they'll be selling like hot cakes for the foreseeable future. Same reason people still buy Mercedes despite almost a decade of being at the bottom of JDpowers.
Hyundai just released its Sonata which is a Camry killer but people still won't buy it because of the stupid Excel they made back in the 80's. GM should be worried but their not. They are still number one in their eyes. Corporate GM doesn't see it. But if I was a lowly GM employee or ex-employee I would be really worried and pissed. The sentiments in the above posts, real or imagined, are everywhere.

Yes they do...The Cobalt which is getting rave reviews from th esame people who were so enamored on the hondas and toyotas...

Ignore reality....you are just pregudice against GM and Damned the proof to the contrary of what you want to think..

People were not buying SUV's becasue nothing else was availible...they buy them becasue they want them....They still buy them becasue they want them...

rg2098 11-21-2005 04:07 PM

You can ***** about SUVs all you want and I hate them too, but the H2 and other Suburban still are top sellers.

koop 11-21-2005 04:24 PM

The big 3 had 70% of US market share in 1990 and has about 55% now. Of that only DCX has picked up any market share, about 1%. Not everyone wanted big SUV's.

Happy Holidays! :)

Ara T. 11-21-2005 07:38 PM

I agree on the Cobalt, it's actually a solid lil car that scored better in crash tests than its Japanese counterparts (corolla, civic).
