Good First Rifle?

Now that I'm 18 (have been for about 4 months now) I can buy a rifle. Yes, they let us buy rifles in California, ya just have to wait 10 days after you make your purchase to go get your gun I've never fired a gun before and figure it would be wise to go to a range or something and try some out before buying anything. I doubt I'll ever hunt, this is mostly for target shooting. But, for future reference...

Im wondering what a good rifle would be to start off with... I'd rather not have a .22. I was always interested in German stuff, go figure... so Mauser K98's, but I wonder if 8mm would be too much to handle for a newbie... well I'm not a skinny lil guy, im ~185 lbs, and my upper body anatomy is wider/broader than your average joe. I know those SKS's are always pretty cheap at sporting goods stores. Aside from that I'm pretty much in the dark here. I know a lot of you guys know your guns, so I could use some advice here.

8mm mauser is a cannon. I have a german army one that was brought back after the war for my grandfather. It's got a hole in the stock where the soldiers would insert a shell to scratch out (or hollow out) the lead and insert woodchips or other schrapnel-making crud so they would do more damage.

My first gun was a shotgun; 16g BOLT action. for some dumb reason, I have been partial to bolt action ever since. Spend some time at a range, and get yourself some good ear protectors... especially if you go with that mauser...

Unless you're rich, get a 22, the ammo is cheaper. You should shoot a lot and you'll go broke with the big stuff, especially if its a semi-auto.

Believe it or not,...I was trained on the same range that my mother achieved
Marksman status (30 years before me).
Stubb's Hardware had an indoor range on the third floor. .22 caliber rifles.
The M-1's the Coast Guard trained us on at Cape May were like doing brain
surgery by long distance telegraph.

Safety,...Ear protection,...Eye protection. If you can (at a later time) hit a
dime with a .22 caliber ...you're well on your way to marksmanship.

I always heard that those Ruger 10/22's were good but I'd like a bolt action rifle.

I'd probably select a .223 for starters if you don't want a .22

I hadn't even taken into account the price of bullets... maybe a .22 would be wise. Anyone have any suggestions for bolt action .22LR's?

Get a 22 mag or .17 HMR they are widely available in bolt action and very accurate @ 100 yds. They are perfect for teaching yourself the fundementals or if you wnat something with some umph get a .223 in whatever Bold action you want.

Beginners shouldn't have autos IMO.

Izmash CM-2, bolt action single shot .22, ~$385. Every bit as accurate as that Anschutz match rifle at a fraction of the price.

My suggestion would be to buy a Ruger 10-22 or whatever the Marlin/Savage quivalent would be.

Folks, before we get too carried away. Why not go to a gun range where they rent all sorts of guns and then figure out what you like best? I did that with my wife when I wanted to get her a Glock 23

Are they still importing these? Who is the importer? I first saw one in American Rifleman and I have been occasionally looking for one but I haven't seen one in CA. I know they're not banned but then again few people are looking for Biathlon or Match type rifles......except me of course.
