I am planning to build a kit car (porsche 550), and my very sympathethic wife (of 25 years on 12/12) says:"what do you do want for Christmas; abc? xyz? tools? (tools!!, did I say very sympathetic?) I have lots of hand tools and enjoy turning wrenches on the 4 family cars, so what do you suggest? Keep it under $200.

Portable compressor...you may not think you need one and then, all of a sudden, you're pumping soccer balls and pool toys, inflating tires, undoing wheel lugs (with the optional impact wrench), and spray-painting the wrought iron fence!

My even more-sympathetic wife had a huge 60-gal unit delivered in front of the garage a few years ago for our wedding anniversary! I'm the equipment manager for my daughter's soccer team, so airing up 16 soccer balls each week is no small task...

Two words, my friend: Pawn Shops.

You can pick up compressors almost anytime. The guy I deal with won't sell me junk, either, so I buy with confidence. Most places will give you a 48-hour guarantee. Just take it home and run it for a while; make sure it build pressure, doesn't leak or overheat, etc...

I just bought another Reddy heater from my favorite pawn shop... a propane model this time. That makes 2 in my garage!

The air compressor sounds good, but I don't know anything about them. Home Depot has a Husky 26 gal with accessory kit for $299; and Lowes has a Kobalt 10 gal with acessory kit for $199. Or should I look elsewhere?

An air compressor is the best and mose usefull tool you can add to your garage. Once you have one you will wonder what you did before it!

Just buy the biggest one you can afford, the bigger the capacity the better. If you plan on running an impact gun or air grinders you won't have to wait for the compressor to catch up. Air grinders use a lot of air so if you want to run one a lot you want a compressor with a big tank.

What do you mean by remove the pressure regulator? I have that exact same compressor, and would really like to know how to give it a boost, as it is bit weak in its current form.

Perhaps a motorcycle jack instead of a pad for the floor jack.
Certainly a synchro meter for the weber carbs.
