Shotgun wedding......

Nah, just felt it was the time to settle down. I loved my wife and it was and still is the right thing to have done.

Do you really,REALLY want a dissertation on this subject?

And why the assumption of agnosticism for those you wish to query?

You have been warned.......

Semi-godless, here. Superstitious agnostic.

We got married on a whim, I guess. Been together ever since. 30 years last october. None of my friends thought we'd be married more than a few months or a year, max. Mrs Bot says we've stayed together this long because we both lack imagination. Also, Mrs B attends church regularly and always has. So do 2/3 of our kids. She's from a church-going family. My dad was an atheistic agnostic and Mom, a conservative C of E church lady.

First let me tell you that I beleave in the human spirit but not in any higher power that created all. I am 38 and have been married to my beautifull 28 year old wife for 5 years. Before I got married I bartended for 10 years and was quite the man whore! I figured if I didn't quit doin the do so much my diddly would turn black and fall off!!!! Turns out the decision was the best of my life! We have lots of fun together, still have a wonderfull sex life and enjoy each others company.Yes,marriage is by far the hardest thing I have ever done but it is also the most rewarding!

I'm guessing I'm qualified to answer the question. I was 22, she was 18. Everyone around us got married. Sex outside of marriage was sinful. What choice did we have?

Of course, I no longer am so naive. Married 29 yrs. I have given some serious thought to getting divorced, not because I don't love my wife, but because I no longer think the State or the Church should be sanctioning personal relations. But the traditional benefits accorded to married people in our society, have hindered my principled divorce

We have some friends who have been together as long as we have. Never legally married but common-law. He is about to retire from federal employment. They were just forced to be married by the State. GW (?) created a federal rule that common law spouses could not qualify for federal pension survival benefits anymore. She has no pension. What choice did they have?

I'd be lying if I were to claim that it had nothing to do with access to affordable health care for my wife. Add to that access to affordable health care for an (at that time) unconceived child that we wished to have, and for the pregnancy that would be associated with such a child.

More than that, it was a public declaration of our commitment to make our lives together. That meant something to us, to our families, and to the larger community.

My hat's off to Germany, where a civil ceremony is officially required and solely sufficient. Have whatever church ceremony you like (or not), believe what you want about it, but the civil ceremony is what makes for marriage in the eyes of the state. If marriage is to have an official standing, then I think that's not a bad way to go about it.

As benighted a place as some might believe it to be, my hat's off to Florida, too, to the extent that one can be married by a notary public. We were.

Here is my next question, since most of you base your non belief on scientific principals and theory why don't you do what every other male mammal does and spread the seed? I'm asking this because I run into godless types from time to time and I see one commonality between them. The Commonality that I see is a total willingness to alter rules or standards for their own personal gain, which BTW is well noted above.

If you're suggesting God-types don't spread the seed, I'm unconvinced. I think sexual fidelity is not correlated with metaphysical beliefs.

I've been offered some pretty enticing stuff that I have passed on because in my own belief that although it is legal I didn't think it was moral, coincidentally the godless gang jumped all over the opportunities for the sake of holding more "in god we trust" marked pieces of paper in thier pocket.

Beleave me, I have spread the seed so many times to so many women that I lost track years ago. I have always thought that church and God was for people that needed to beleave in a higher power for comfort and support. I beleave in me and mine, doing what makes us happy as long as it doesn't affect others. Why is it God fearing folk always want to convert the non-beleavers but we non-beleavers couldn't give a rats behind about converting them to think like us?

In the interest of a reasonable discussion, might we be a little bit cautious about making overly broad generalizations?
