Smile '93 300E Dash/Instrument Panel Removal

Has anyone wrestled with removing the instrument panel on later 124's? Seems you need to get or make a special tool actually two tools consisting of thin but very strong wire each with a small hair-pin bend at the ends (like hooks). Was wondering if anyone had made these things for themselves and what they used? Any overall recommendations? How much force is required to "pop" the whole assembly out and can I expect some damage to the instrument bezel from this procedure? Appreciate any input.
