Unless your name is Saddam. In which case you'd probably find the story amusing.

when operating a wood chipper its best to have two or three people operating incase of such an event happening.. 2 toss wood in and the other supervises and has a hand on the off button.. id suck to go out like that..

His sons were even crazier.....I don't know anyone who would use a military helicopter to shoot at his own troops for fun....that's sick.

Remind me to never operate a wood chipper.

A bad way to go. Wood chipper.

Reminds me of the ending of the movie "Fargo".

A while back at a city park, I saw a couple of employees crank up a chipper. It was a pretty serious trailer-based unit where one just tosses the stuff on the deck (low, for easy loading) and nudges it into the continuously operating feed mechanism.

They left it running while both of them walked around looking for and collecting deadfall to feed it. No one was in immediate attendance to the chipper.

They did this near an open playground area that was thick with little kids. As they collected deadfall, there were times when the park employees were further away from the chipper than some of the kids were.

Whoa...

That is some sobering stuff. Good observation. If I see something like that, I'm going to go up and get in someone's face -- not that I'm giving you a hard time for not doing it -- I've walked past plenty of incidents that I later considered I should have reacted differently towards.

All the rules for operating a chipper state: no jewelry, no loose clothing, wear safety glasses, and NO gloves - ear protection is recommended

I probably could have made a substantial impression on them if I had found a nice big rock and tossed it into their chipper while they were meandering around collecting wood.

More realistically, I could have contacted someone further up the chain of command later. I have no idea if it was a couple of employees not following established procedures, or if instead it was a more fundamental problem of not establishing such procedures and properly communicating them to the employees. Hey, this post got me thinking about - I know the exact date, so I could still drop them a letter.

As it was, I'll admit that I wasn't on the top of my game that day. My wife had been called out of town abruptly due to a death in the family, so I was going it solo for a few days with my girl. I settled for locating myself where I could still keep an eye on her, but also be between the chipper and all the kids - and stayed there until they took the chipper away. Under other circumstances, if I'd been there with my better half, I might have given them Hell about it.

Sounds like you did pretty much the right thing. I know the feeling -- you see something like that and you think you should do something about it and for some reason you don't. I can't quite figure myself on that stuff. Most people do not react well to criticism of any sort. Still, I need to learn to step up when it matters.

I think the letter would be a good idea. Would likely have a lot more impact than you're saying anything that day would have had.
