Diy Garages
I was watching Stephen King's Christine the other day. Apparently back in the day they had DIY garages where you pay a storage fee for your vehicle.
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THEY STILL HAVE THESE AND HOW TO FIND THEM. I am looking for one in the houston area, preferebly southwest. yellowpage searches don't seem to turn up anything but i did find one at this link http://www.innerauto.com/yp/Do_It_Yourself_Garages/TX/Houston/ |

I remember having one in my neighborhood years ago. I think liability pretty much killed the concept. Dropping a car off a lift onto someone will do bad things to your premiums.

At one time a lot of the Mobil stations around Dallas had a diy deal where you could rent a lift by the hour. It only lasted for a year or so, but it sure was handy. Would have been about 1976 or so.

In 1963-65 my parents operated such a garage in the Charlotte area as a second income business. A radio DJ/friend ran it during the day, then they ran it in the evening after regular work hours. Some interesting stories.... keeping up with loaned-out tools chief among them. We stopped by a few years ago when passing through town. The building across the street was still there, but their building was now just an auxilliary parking lot for... the Carolina Panthers stadium.

just north of cincinnati. I'm sure the guy is busy (I was up there last week checking things out.) so I'm not sure he's gonna tell you how he got the insurance to work out...he did mention that he's the only one in the US insured to do things like he is. as a potential customer, I'm eager to hear feedback - he seems to be focusing on painting/bodywork though. -John

The thing I miss most about Cinnci, is Jungle Jims. Well, OK, its in Fairfield. But once you've been there, NOTHING else measures up. |

Granted, the other branches likely have similar (read, "better" as the Marine Corps typically makes do with less) offerings, but who wants to be a Dog-Face, a Zoomie, a Shallow-Water-Sailor, or worst of all...a Squid?

MS Fowler - I live east of Cinti, so Jungle Jims is a 45 minute drive away, but well worth every time - theyv'e grown in the last 2 years, you should stop back by... still at their old locaiton on Rt4...
We'll see if the painter's lane place stays in buisness... -John

man, I've lived in St. Louis for 20 years, but grew in Western Hills and went to Jungle Jim's a grand total of once in my life...wild place, everything imaginable there. And, St. X won state football last week...go Bombers! My dad mailed me the Western Hills Press the other day with blurbs about the victory.

you ask:
Why is it not workable on the civilian side ? Dude, what country do you live in?? - but there is a reason its tough to insure (and turn a profit) - potentially dangerous stuff going on, and potentially untrained/illequipped/stupid people working there. Lawsuits ? I'm sure there'll be some at some point...
I'd imagine (not sure) that its tougher to sue on a military base, and a slightly more limited/educated clientelle....slightly =) (ex-squid/bubblehead, current Air guardsman here =) Yeah, you need to sign a waiver to get a membership to painterslane (and a $50 fee for 1 year, PLUS fees per hour of use of certain facilities...). I have one of thier waivers on my desk right now, I can scan/copy if you want. The guy starting it is ex-navy, I wish him well. If I ever get up there to powder-coat my bundtcakes, I'll post pics =) Hopefully, the idea will take off, and that will lead more insurers to get into the mix (money to be made) - it'd give us DIY'ers a lot better places to be...maybe we'd spend less time on the internet... nah =) -John
