Sure is...

I just read a lengthy post on the diesel forum from a guy who went to college and became an ASE certified break technician. Hell, I don't need somebody to break my car, I can do that myself....

I saw the results of some study the other day that was really sad. I can't exactly recall the details, but it seems that although more Americans are graduating HS and obtaining college degrees than ever before, there has been no net increase in general knowledge and ability. IOW, Americans seem to be spending more time in school than ever before, but without positive results.

There you go -- it's been said that the beginning of wisdom is often associated with the utterance of a simple three-word phrase -- "I don't know".

Sad but true. Most of the recent college graduates I encounter are lacking not only experience, but basic knowledge, basic skills, and basic common sense. I don't know what the solution is.

I think we need to get high school grads into some hands on work before they go to college. I heard a book review on NPR a few years back and I wish I could find the book, cause it sounded good. The author had done a lot of study on how using ones hands affects the learning process. He quoted a college engineering professor who said he'd noticed that students who'd done some auto mechanics or carpentry with their dad or uncles in their high school years learned quicker than those who hadn't.

Makes sense to me. I'm floored by some of the ignorance I've seen people who out-earn me 10 to 1 display, and I've worked for a fair number of folks in that category. They've got some specialized skill that brings in the money but a really limited understanding of how things in the real world work.

Kinda scary.

You may have hit on a good idea there Berk. Take the 11th grade, and, instead of filling their heads with more mush, make it a year of practical, hands-on work experience, including earning a small amount of money. I bet something along that line might actually work.

No the most rpresumptuous people are the Aetheist Darwinians....whoes theoreys change so often they are out of date before a book can be published that insist on forcing their idea du jour as the end all beat all final word.....

Between forcing Darwinism on kids and indocrinating them into socialism they forgot their primary mission was to teach the three "R"s...which they are failing misserably at.

Kind of off-topic but when exactly did Creationism change to Intelligent Design?

I believe they wanted to add a dash of "we are smart" to their hunch.
