Opus Dei
Anyone here belong/belonged to Opus Dei or have any friends or relatives that belong? I just finished John Allen's book on the movement and I learned a lot. I'm guessing that the social profile of 'Shop posters is unlikely to include members but I'm curious about people's experience/knowledge. I had a student a couple of years ago that I got to know pretty well but never was able to get a clear handle on his social context. I'm now pretty sure he belonged to Opus Dei. I was fairly surprised to learn the extent of their zeal and the depth of their rejection of bodily existence. I didn't know that any Catholics still practiced corporal mortification to the extent of inflicting physical pain on themselves.

I know two people who are members. Both are what I would call modern and rational. One is married and middle-aged and the other is single and younger. I asked one what he thought of the book "Da Vinci Code" and he said that he hoped it would spark an interest among Catholic men to investigate Opus Dei to learn the 'truth.' I have not asked the other guy about it. There was a PBS program about Opus Dei, given the secular interest in that silly-assed book. Basicly it indicated that the movement was a lot more boring than the book.
Of the two men I know, one I know very well. He is a deeply committed Christian and Catholic, father and husband. He believes his life's work (including family and job and hobby, etc), should all contribute to the greater glory of God--that there is no sense is wasting one's time on things that don't glorify God through good work. I wonder what Martin Luther would have thought? Bot |

They sound like supernumeraries, the basic level of membership. The more 'commited' members are numeraries who live in Opus Dei houses and are much more rigorous in their practice. They have to have the books they read approved by their center's director (even college textbooks), the directors even open their mail and they use the cilice and discipline daily or weekly. But they all focus on the sanctification of work.
I see them being opposed to modernity because they are totally commited to the teaching of the Church. They grant themselves no authority in deciding religious questions. They unquestioningly accept everything the Church teaches. I'm thinking Martin Luther would be somewhat upset.
