New Orleans cops....

Maybe I've been living under a rock, but I just saw a black dude, wielding a knife, who apparently was shot times by cops in NO I think.

from what I saw in the video, it shows him holding a knife, with about a dozen cops pointing guns at him.

Apparently he was shot over 10 times and killed.

Couldn't one of those cops just have wounded the poor bastard instead of killing him?

Even 20 feet away, if he charged one of them, he could have easily been shot in the leg.

Hindsight is always 20/20, so if a cop ever tells you to surrender, do so. Some of them may have itchy triger fingers.

If that were the case, why don't they shoot drivers who refuse to pull over? You might say that if they were doing so in midtown manhattan, they may injure more people, but say it was out in the hwy and no one was around for miles and miles.

The only video I say was cutoff after a while so we'll never know waht really happened.

Back in the 1950's and early 60's, police officers had the right to shoot at fleeing subjects. That is one of the reasons we had a very low crime rate and no police chases on TV.

Joe,

If you think that having the authority to shoot fleeing suspects is the reason that we had a low crime rate (do you know how low the crime rate was then?) in the 50's and 60's you are, as they say, laboring under a snare and a delusion. In the last few years the US crime rate has dropped to its lowest in a number of decades despite the fact that the police do not shoot fleeing suspects. I will grant you that if the police could shoot fleeing suspects we would not have as many 'Police Wildest Videos', but, then again, do we really need those tv shows?

That man in NOLA did not need to be shot anymore than I need to fly to the moon. A stun gun, a concussion grenade, hell, even a lasso would have worked. The trouble is that when police deploy as they did only a violent end will reduce their testosterone level and say to the citizens on their city, "Don't mess with us." I say the above because I have a brother that was a cop and have seen how he and others operate.

I am for shooting any SOB dumb enough to be brandishing a weapon at the cops when they are told to drop it and he or she doesn't. Saved the taxpayers a bundle in incarceration and court costs.

Put it this way, you break into my house and won't drop your weapon I will punch a couple holes in you. You think I am going to wait and see what you do? Now, if you head towards the door, fair enough. You stand and won't lower your knife and I will not hesitate to squeeze off a couple of rounds and I will train the laser sights on your head or heart.

Police officers are trained to defend themselves with deadly force only. They do not aim for appendages as a rule. The standard procedure was followed if the man did not drop his weapon. The form of weapon is immaterial. It could be a hunk of Jello, but as soon as it is used to smother a cop, it is a weapon and deadly force is warranted.

The training given and SOP's followed, are cookie cutter devices used in an unpredictable world. Sometimes the square piece must be pounded into the circle.

I didnt watch the video, I'm on diallup...

I think the term is "escalation of force". I'd explain but I'm just some guy on the internet, I'm gonna go look around some more before I start spouting off about what must happen for an officer to use "deadly force"...

Well, a knife is considered a deadly weapon, right? What guy in his right mind would wait till you charged him and then aim for the leg or arm? The body is the largest target followed by the head. Like I said before, I am not going to sit and see if you do manage to get that knife in me. I wouldn't risk myself and I sure as hell wouldn't ask a cop to risk himself to see if he hits the leg to wound or whatever.

Well, if it isn't the king of stupid and/or meaningless one liners.

Lets hear what YOU would do if you had the drop on an armed man in your house that you don't know. Ask him if he wants tea or coffee?

I'm sure they could. However, as much as I try, I cannot see asking them to risk themselves getting killed or worse trying to decide if the guy is high on PCP or just trying to be cute and get his pic in the news.
