Back Glass W126

I kept with my promise of giving a Christmas gift of a new windshield for the SDL. Found an incredible deal on new glass so the BWM received a windshield and the SD received new back glass to get rid of that ugly de-lamination problem. Windshield’s went in no problem. However, the back glass on the SD was making me curse in German. WTF, I cannot get the final side/corner to stay in place (catch). There was a thread on this but I cannot find it – maybe it was part of the threads that were lost. If anyone can steer me the right way it would be appreciated.

You can't get the seal to grab the metal lip? I wrapped a string around the whole window like 3-4 times and pulled it out. This seemed to work great.

Yes the last corner piece will not grab, just pops out. I don't understand about the string --- but eagerly listening.

I wonder how you got the window in without the string trick!

After you put the gasket on the window and put the aluminum trim in the gasket you wrap a string around the gasket. This string goes in the grove of the gasket that the metal lip of the cars body will eventualy sit in. I used kite string, wrap it around the window about 3 times just in case it snaps. Then lay the window in the car, spray with soapy water for lube and start pulling the string. The gaskets lip should pop over the metal lip and the window will be pulled tight. Push it around as the gasket seals to position it.

It takes maybe 20 minutes if it works.

I then ran MB sealent around the car body/gasket joint and the gasket window joint.

Hatties correct - it actually took longer to remove the gasket from the car then it did to put the whole mess back in . I didn't think the 126 CD would discuss the glass, but duh yes it does, with pictures and that made the whole thing come together. Shiny glass in all three girls now

Yeah the CD is actually pretty good! It worked like a charm didn't it! Now that I did one I think I can do it again in about 1/2 the time, the first time is the hardest.

I thought the windshield in the SDL was going to be the hardest and the back glass in the SD was going to be easy. Turns out the windshields in the SDL and BMW were a snap and the backglass was a PIA Yes and the second time around would be a snap...but how many times in a lifetime do you change the back glass in a 126

While we are on the subject - did your back glass have the same connectors for the defrost? The new glass has a larger connector and has a radio antenna in the glass also. I guess they are just standard slip connectors. I had not planned on getting the back glass but when ordering the other two they asked if I wanted a deal on the back. Guess someone ordered and never picked up.

I was lucky and got my back glass out of my 1988 420SEL parts car. It was in perfect shape and free so I got lucky.

Everything was the same as the original back glass.

I had a terrible time reinstalling the back glass in my 1982 300SD. Finally I realized that the trim had become distorted in the removal process and it never would lay flat. While trying to get it to lay flat, I eventually cracked the glass.
Then I went to my U pull it yard and removed the glass with the trim intack from an 86 W126. I believe there was a change in the trim and the gasket between '82 and 86, but if you keep the trim with the correct gasket, they are interchangeable as a group. The backlight that i removed also had a near perfect gasket ( seal). That was why I picked it. I removed the backlight with the trim intact, transported it home and cleaned it up; never removing the trim. I inserted a 1/4 inch diameter line in the channel, set the glass in place, and used an 80 lb bag of sand to keep pressure on the glass at the bottom. Then I went inside, sprayed saopy water along the seal as I pulled the line, and it just popped onto the flange like it was designed that way. The trim stayed right where it belonged. The whole installation time was well under 20 minutes.
If the trim does not want to fit, it is probably bent, and you will crack the glass trying to make it work.

My rear defogger has like two lines that work. Drives me nuts. What does new rear glass go for?

I paid $90 cash and carry (new) - as written above they had this back glass ordered for someone else who never picked it up plus was buying front glass for the SDL and the BMW.

Like so many things once you figure out what going on it's a cinch to do again. I just became very anal with the install and for what ever reason did not even think about consulting the 126 CD
