How do I get the best price for Airfare?

I don't fly very often, maybe once a year.
But, I wonder how you get the best price for airline tickets?
I have to fly in April at Easter time..
I don't like spending more money than the guy sitting next to me on the same flight.
I know some of you guys are very experienced travelers.

Also www.expedia.com
www.orbitz.com and www.cheaptickets.com

You have to check all websites mentioned to find the best deal. Also if you have multiple airports nearby like we do in NY try out the prices for flying out of different ones.

Also don't be picky with which airline you prefer.

I often search for the flights using expedia, travelocity, etc, and then go to the airlines' direct sites. It is typically cheaper when dealing directly with the airline.

If possible, include a weekend departure or return. Business travelers (anyone, including tourist that only fly Mon - Fri) get held up at gunpoint by commercial airlines.

just booked to europe using expedia tonight paid $25 more than mom and dad who booked Friday, this is on a May trip. advice book early. If you're doing europe, you can sometimes do well going to London the making your own connection to the continent. Again, like the others have said the site you pick can make all the difference.

Some airlines, like Southwest, don't sell on the consolidated sites so you need to go to their website. It also depends on where you are flying. There is a flights forum on cheap european travel website that posts lots of good deals. For instance, someone posted Aer Lingus flights from Chicago to Dublin round trip for $234 a couple of months ago. Couldn't find those prices on the consolidated sites. A couple of times I've found excellent prices on CheapTickets.com but you have to deal with a small goofy travel agent in NJ.
I've also found that buying too early can result in high priced tickets. As I recall, flights to Europe for the summer should not be booked before the end of January.
