As a group most music icons like Bono, Mich Jagger, Elvis Costello, Lou reed and just about any other say that The Clash is the most influential band since Elvis. There is even a quote from the great BB King about the Clash, I have to look for it but hey if he like it it has to be good.
What do you think? More and more movies are using Clash songs for music scores, cell companies are using songs for rings tones and advertisements. Not bad for a few punks eh? |

Gotta agree with MedMech on this Clash was hot!
Saw them in Binghamton NY in 70's, in sneakers and an American flag. ...breakin rocks in the Hot sun..."

The Clash... man, I still get goose bumps when I hear Train in Vain. Big Audio Dynamite is fun, but don't hold a candle to the original lineup. Man, now I wish I had the box set on my iTunes here at work!

great tunes
In about '83 I was stuck in wonderful but quiet Wilmington NC. My sister in law calls and says the WHO is playing their fairwell tour ( #1, 2? 3?) in Buffalo that weekend, with the Clash as the front band. Hop on the road and we're there. It was a GREAT concert for over 4 hours between them. So we ended up missing work on Monday...
The world needs more good tunes. Chuck |

The Clash were cool but didn't hold a candle to Depeche Mode or OMD.

I like BAD, but as mentioned, it pales compared to The Clash.
Streetcore however, caught me by surprise. What a fantastic album. Could really almost be a Clash album. Which tells you where the heartbeat of the Clash came from. I think Mick was an excellent arranger and had an ear for pop, but Joe was the engine of the train. The duo of Headon/Simonon has to be one of the most underrated rhythm sections ever.

The Clash is o.k. to me, but the soundtrack to my high school days is sung by U2.
When I first heard the album War, it was like a lightning bolt from God. The song Sunday Bloody Sunday was a revelation. The album came out in '83, when I was a freshman in high school. And then The Joshua Tree came out in '86 or '87, and to this day, it still ranks, to me, as one of the greatest rock albums of all time. Med Mech, I was looking at that book at Costco the before X-mas, and I remember The Joshua Tree was ranked pretty high. Do you remember its ranking?

U2 started of trying to be the Clash. Bono even admits it. If you listen to the albums 'October' or 'Boy' you can hear the influences.
It wasn't until the album WAR that U2 started to find their niche. The Unforgettable Fire was close, but no cigar! Still a great album. Then the Joshua tree came out and WOW! When I heard Bono talk about the clash I ran out an got the album back in 85. Hooked ever since. I have to listen to it every now and then for some sanity from the current rock offerings |
