Insurance help?

Ok, I'm turning 16 in a month or so, and getting my lisance on march 2nd unless I'm stupid... I have a TON of questions that I'd like answered

My mom has "Sentry insurance" which I have never heard of Should I go under her on that policy? Or can I go with a real company to be safer? I'm doing a progressive quote, but I dont know what limits I should have... Sentry would cost me $110 a month for liability only on an 82f150, unsure on limits

Progressive (per their online quote) with the minimum coveratge +1000 medical payments (hit as pedestrian) is $115 a month

Limits are; Bodily Injury and Property Damage: 25k person/50k colision/10k property damage
Underinsurance bodily injury 25k person/ 50k colision
Uninsured is 25k person/100k colision

It goes to $125 a month if I hike it up to;
BIPD: 50k person/100k colision/25k property damage
UMIBI is still 25k person/50k colision
Uninsured is still 25k person, 100k colision

Questions I have are this... Is that enough? Eau Claire doesnt have too many ritzy cars, hold for the occasional vett or suburban...

Are the cars considered to be the property damage, or do they just cover the other persons car regardless of its price?

Any other insurance companys I can checkout online?

Thanks alot, I really appreciate it
~Nate

Ok, here is the deal....

I am a Farmers Agent, and I can help.

You only have liability, which is a good thing for a starting driver. I have full coverage now, but when I started to drive, liability only. It is the cheapest thing out there.

Few q's tho.

Do you own your own home? If so, go for higher limits so that you dont get screwed if you hit someone and lose your home.

Do you have any nice equipment in our truck? If not, you are ok with liability only.

If you have good health insureance, that is a good thing, it will save you money. You do not need med pay if you have good health insurance.

Ill get the rest of my info up in a few. Got to go to agent meeting.

Oh before I go, if you have been driving for a year, with a permit, declare it. I do it, and it saves me 100$ every 6 months.

It used to be that Allstate was cheaper until you turned 25. Best thing to do, is check with all of the companies (make sure you always ask for the same coverages, or else the comparisons will be useless.) If you are still in school, and get good grades, mention it...some companies give 5% off for good grades. If you have an added alarm they may give you a discount. 4 doors are cheaper to insure than 2 doors (usually).
I prefer larger names in the business, instead of JoeSchmoe Ins. co. I also dislike going to Ins. brokers (the kind that offer lown down payments and monthly installments) I have never known anybody to be happy with them and the Insurers they "represent".

Good luck!

Yes, stay under her policy, if she allows it. The cost will be far less than attempting to get a new policy in your own name...........if you can even do it without ending up in assigned risk.

Assigned risk? Can you please explain that more clealy to me?

I'd love to stay under her policy if it was from a respectabal company... Its not IMHO

Its looking to me like I can get a progressive one for around $125 a month, but Its from a good company... Allstates website will NOT let me get a quote for a 82 f150 regular cab 4wd 2 door V8, I think its a glitch...

Can anybody else bring that vehical up if they were doing a quick quote? I cant at all...

I also found the anti allstate website, great...

Assigned risk is a pool that you are cast into when you can't get insurance from any carrier under their standard policies. It typically applies when you have too many violations or accidents. I had thought it might apply to you because you never had your own policy before, so none of the companies would want to write it. But, clearly, you have found some that will write for a 16 year old with no driving history.........clearly a high risk on their part.

What draws you to the conclusion that Sentry is not a good carrier?? Problems paying legitimate claims??

The benefit of your own policy is the fact that there is no recourse to your mother if you should have a serious accident.

The rate of $125.00 per month does not sound excessive, but, I'm more familiar with NY rates, so I'm probably a poor judge.

I'd see what the cost would be if you were to be an additional driver under your mother's policy, for comparison sake.

They just dont seem very well known, and allthough they paied when my mom had her crash 6 years ago, the van was taken to a two bit shop, and never drove right again (97 villeger bought new in late 98, sold for 7k in 2002 with 45k miles after it sat for 2 years... ARG)

They kinda make me nervious, but i can check again...

........not necessarily a reason to reject them outright.

Allstate is very well known and are also known to avoid paying the full amount of the claim whenever they can possibly get away with it.

"You're in good hands, that's Allstate's stand". Bull$hit.

you can do this, get classic insurace for your car if it is older than 1990. you pay about less that $100 a year and just BE CAREFUL when driving. Saves you and your family a bunch of money. Thing is, it has to be in your moms name since this classic ins co doesnt allow drivers with out at least 10yrs driving experience

For Christ sakes, its an old ford pickup, common as can be. Its not in good shape, but it runs good, and has 4WD and a winch on the frount... Its also has alot of power... For pulling things obviously

By no means a collectors item, by ANYONES standards... Hence the liability only I want to put on it.

I guess I can check to see how much sentry is, O well

whoa whoa whoa wait.. are you just insuranceing yourself nate .. or adding yourself and the benz to the plan .. or getting a seperate quote all by yourself.. i want to know how this is possible..

all we are doing is registering the car in my moms name and insuring it in her name.. and ill drive it everyday .. it will have full coverage and stuff.. i cant afford to insure it under my name it would cost 400 a month with my license.. doing it under my moms name is only 50$ a month..

ps progressive sucks

I'm just punching numbers on progressives web site, why do you say they suck?

I dont like the idea of insuring the truck with my mom as a primary driver, but me driving it 98% of the time...
