That's almost spooky looking...But... like an accident, you have to look.

Why haven't these pics been readily published before? And was technology available to make a camera with a mechanical shutter capable of such a high-speed shutter rate?

Good questions.

I'll bet that those pics are faked.

It is not a mechanical shutter... It is a rotating mirror (rotating at extremely high speed), and the film is advanced in the path of the mirror's reflection. This is how such incredibley fast exposures can be affected. Another way of stating it would be "millions of frames a second" like expressing machine gun capability in thousands of rounds per second.

Look up a little bit about Harold Edgarton (brief biography here). He's the "E" in "EG&G", for those of you for whom that company name might ring a bell.

Those who wish to see similar pictures might Google "Rapatronic", the name of the camera.

Thanks for the name - rapatronic. Did a search - many pics and explanations of what was captured on film.
I am surprised The Discovery Channel or The History Channel hasn't done a show on this yet. If they did, I missed it.

Almost looks like the 'fourth state of matter': plasma. It's a good thing it happens fast 'cause it looks terrifying.

PS Did you see that hour-long documentary on atomic tests? It was produced from recently declassified docs and imagery. I think it was released in maybe 1991 or 1992. It reminded me of "duck-and-cover drills when I was a kid. My wife, also a military brat, recalls growing-up on military bases (SAC) thinking about nuclear obliteration. We still come to a standstill with the, "This is a test" announcements on TV or radio.

I also though the pictures to be a bit terrifying. Absolutly amazing how fast the ball grew...mere fractions of a second. The first exposure, I looked at it a long time before deciding that the shape of the sphere, with the blotches of color (or flame, who knows since it is black & white) almost look like a giant model of a molecule. Anyone else notice that?

NOVA did a show back in the 1990's. I think it was a biography of Edgerton. Anybody else see it?
