God, ain't that the truth. I was go-kart happy when I was 12 and 13 but my dad wouldn't get me one. I made a couple of crude ones and we lived on the edge of Roswell, NM with a couple of vacant streets just out beyond our house onna account it was a development in progress. The first go kart was halfway safe, I used a coffee table top -- some kind of plywood; front wheels were from a soap box derby racer -- steered with the feet on the axle; and the rear end was an actual go kart type axle that I affixed a belt pully on; the engine was a lawn mower engine which you controlled with your thumb next to the carburetor. The second one was faster; had a better engine and gear ratio, for some reason, I forget, I didn't use the soap box derby wheels, instead I fastened the halves of an old style steel roller skate to each side of a 2x4. :D
It would barely steer and I won't forget the time I let two younger neighbor boys try it out and they were barreling towards the turn on the backstretch and didn't know to let off on the gas -- the steel wheels wouldn't make the turn and they went spilling off, getting huge scrapes. I'm lucky as hell their alcoholic old man didn't try to sue my halfway prosperous dad. Probably never even heard about it.
