That was a decent investment

Back in the early 70's, we started buying our sons, complete sets of baseball cards, and on occasion, star players cards from earlier years. I paid $85 dollars in the late 70's for a 55 Clemente and one son sold it ten years ago for $900. The complete unopened sets are bringing thousands of bucks and the sons who are almost 40 now are contemplating selling. The sets when we bought them were around 40 to 50 dollars. The only mistake I made was not buying myself sets at the same time.

Why are they selling them?

My dad left me his coin collection. Which has a lot of rare coins. And his stamp collection.
I know they ar eworth lot's of money but I have no intention of selling any of it.
I hope to leave them to my children. After they reach a certain age of course.

[QUOTE=dannym]Why are they selling them?

Well, let's say one of them is pondering that option. He was on Ebay seeing what kind of money they are bringing, and he could use the money at this time of his life. I have no problem with him selling,,, after all isn't that what investments are for, to get you some capital when it is needed ? I know I don't want to be one of the richest guys in the graveyard.

I'd say hold until he needs the money for a kidney or something. Maybe he should see a financial advisor.

I agree 100%. If they want to buy a house, open a business fine, sell away.
But not because they want to take a trip to Disney Land.

Yes Dan,,, what he wants to do certainly has merit and could end up making him a lot more money than the cards.

My dad bought me stock when I was little. I still have it, and I should check out how it is doing.

Also, I have a coin collection from my pops too. I would never ever think about selling it. We also have a fine collection of Mercedes-Benz automobile that I am hoping will be worth something one day.
