Standing seam roof noisy

I attended a funeral today of a local tile setter who I have been friends with and worked with for about 30 years.

The service was held in a very new church building which had a fairly handsome overall appearance but suffered some glitches in the design detailing and the materials selection and execution.

We were sitting in the very quiet sanctuary listening to the minister speaking words of condolence and comfort when I noticed a noise like someone hitting a plastic bucket with a yardstick. I thought What the heck is someone doing? I turned around because it sounded at first like it might be coming from the balcony....but there is no balcony. So I am looking up and around seeking the source of the sound. I cannot be sure but I am pretty certain that it was the sun hitting the standing seam roof and causing the aluminum to expand and the noise was the metal popping as it slipped past the fasteners to the deck. It continued throughout the entire service.

I can only say that there must not be much insulation between the inside metal decking (which is exposed over bar joists) and the metal roofing on the top of it all.

The building had the feel that it was not designed by an actual Architect with proper training in materials and design. If it was such it was pretty decent looking for the work of an amature. If it was done by a Registered Architect, I am embarressed for the profession.

I can only imagine that the congregation cannot be happy to hear that while trying to worship either.

The church is maybe a quarter of a mile from my friend's house. My son and I used to go fishing there in his pond from the time my son was maybe six until he discovered girls.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

You would think folks would put a little extra effort into a church, but I could be wrong.

As an architect, you would probably really appreciate (ie cringe at) a lot of the contingency construction in Iraq.

Thanks. He was a good man who died at age 60. I have not yet learned what led to his death. I believe he suffered from depression so I am not in a hurry to learn what he died from.

I cringe at most new construction in the us.

Sorry about your friend. I have a metal roof on my house which I installed. It's flat panel and not standing seam. I like the sound of rain on the roof. Hail is even better.

I have a standing seam steel roof on my house. It does "oil can" from time to time depending on the sun, and it is kind of noisy when rain hits it. The steel does not sit directly on the plywood subroof, but is attached to 1/2" thick furring strips that are nailed to it. It ends up creating a drum effect!

I used to love the sound of rain hitting a tin roof when i was a kid. I'd lie on top of bales of tobacco in my grandmothers barns when it rained and enjoy the sound. I hope that one day I'll have a little house somewhere with one of those roofs on it.

Tom, sorry to hear about your friend. I worked in a funeral home for several years when I was in college, and it seems that lots of funeral directors wind up fighting depression when they get in their 60's because their friends and contemporaries start expiring with alarming regularity. They start wondering when their number is coming up...so even people who deal with death and dying every day suffer. Regardless of how he left, just remember the good things, it's all you can do.

I don't know doodly about standing seam roofs, except that they sure look cool on the right kind of building.

It does look cool.

I am good friends with a funeral director here. He recently sold his business but still lives upstairs and helps out from time to time. He is a drinker but I think less so these days.

I did at least a dozen jobs for him through the years and only once saw a body in the embalming room when we were walking through and the door was open by accident. I was not as affected by it as I had always imagined I would be.

Sorry about your friend. 60 is too young to die. I usually look through our local "weekly" to see who died that was younger than me this week

I have "delta" rib roofing on all my buildings, reminds me of the "tropics' when it rains hard.

Yeah, I always think of the old Bogart/Bacal movie..."Key Largo".

Yeah, its kindof depressing whenever I see someone died who is younger than me.

It sucks when you realize that you've begun reading the obituaries in the paper before you get to the sports section . . . . As long as you don't see YOUR name in there, I guess it's not THAT bad, though . .

I've read the obits since I was 18 years old, partly to see which mortuaries are busy, which aren't. I also scan them to see if I recognize any of my customers.
