Whats your best method for selling a car?

I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee i want to sell and I have always used a newspaper ad to sell a car as they were inexpensive and fairly fruitful.
Okay now... what used to be a $8.- $9. affordable ad is now $75. to $85. under the newspapers new pricing. This inflation seemed to happen almost overnight. Maybe this seems cheap to some of you; but here in the Ozarks; it's robbery.
Now it is time to get creative;.... what seems to be the most fruitful methods of selling a car in your experience??
Thanks for your input!

Mr. Kenny, if that is your picture in your Avatar, you are not going to be able to sell your car

I hate buying and selling cars. I hate dickering, ect.....However, the last three cars I sold (including a very expensive one) were sold through www.cars.com which appears on the webpage of my local newspaper. I paid $40 and you get to post a color picture and a paragraph about the car. The ad runs until you sell. I sold all three cars for asking price w/in 2 weeks.

There are a lot of ebayers here too, but I don't have any experience with that. Seems like a lot of additional hassle to me though.

We have a "trading post" which is all stuff for sale...
Its free, and its slogan is "you buy a newspaper to read, you buy a trading post to buy!" or something like that...

bickering, hageling... all part of cars

I love it, seriously good stuff...

I had a 87 mazduhh truck listed in the trading post for $200... SOme guy called up and asked "is there any rust" and i sayd yeah...

week later a guy calls up, and asks "is there any rust" and it sounded like the same guy... I said "no way, its mint" and he bought it for $150... He was just using the rust as leverage What an evil man, but o well... fair price for that POS
still miss beating on it though

eBay. It is the most work, but you *will* get the most money.

This touched a nerve with me. You might feel better when you hear what the local paper (the only one) charges for an ad to rent an apartment. It's the same three line ad that you typically get for an auto sale. However, in their infinite greed, they won't run it for three days........have to run if for seven days.........are you ready to bend over........

$275.00

I can't possibly use them for such a purpose. I'll use the local Yankee Trader rag or the Pennysaver at a cost of $48.00. Not as good.......and you might need to run it a couple of times.......but I'll be GD if I'll pay them $275.00 for a three line ad. These people are simply outrageous.

Don't forget ebay. If your selling it may work out pretty good.

Personally I would recommend autotrader.com

I had a 2000 Cherokee sport i wanted to sell, I had it in the paper first, and barely got any calls and all the people that did call either didnt have (or didnt want to spend) the $$ even though it was very agressively priced.

I put it on autotrader, had a call the next day, and the first person that called, purchased it. I took down the ad a day later, after having at least 6 more calls. The other thing is you can for the most part type to your hearts content, include photos etc, all things that make the presentation more appealing to a prospective purchaser.

Basically I view the newspaper as an analog technology in a digital world. I am not trying to sound biased here, but the more affluent a person, the more likely they are to a) have internet access b) be computer savvy, c) rely on the internet for information. Most people view the newspaper as a source of recreation, especially in a large community, where the internet is where they run to search for needed info.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

George
