Anybody own a Jeep?
Hi everyone. I just bought a 2000 Jeep Cherokee for my wife. It's got 86K on the clock and it looks like somebody took really good care of it. The thing is, I've been with MB for so long I've never even been under the hood of a Jeep! Anybody know of a DIY'er site for Jeeps? Anyone have any personal experience? I gave it a good look before I bought it, but I have no clue about the common issues they have, or what to expect down the road. All responses appreciated. Thanks

volumes of info edit: these guys know their stuff. I linked to a jeep newbie area. Just a word to the wise, DO NOT ask these guys newbie style questions without searching the site history first. They are incredibly knowledgeable but have little patience for repetitively covered topics/questions. This should give you a few months worth of reading |

Don't buy COntinental tires. YOu will slip on any wet road like it was ice!

Never buy one with the aluminum diff housing. For some reason they eat bearings. I think the aluminum diff housing only came in the v8 cherokee.

Here is a Cherokee specific forum:
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=11 They have a lot of good info archieved, but there are also a lot of clueless folks on there that who are excited about sharing their "wisdom." You have to take the bad with the good, I suppose. And much of the discussion is involved with modifications, lifts, etc. That field has a language all its own. Also, the 2000/01 Cherokees have the distributorless ignition systems, which differs greatly from the previous models. I have an '88 Cherokee which I bought new. It's still going strong. Except for being repainted, it's never been in a shop. Last edited by tangofox007; 02-26-2006 at 11:44 AM. |

Had a 97 Grand I6, replaced rear end under warrenty. No other issues. It is great for stormy Northwest winter weather and ice covered streets. The I6 is an old school tractor engine. With proper maintenance, it'll last.

I have a loaded 2000 Cherokee w/60 odd thousand on the odo. I use it truly as an suv and have never been let down.
FYI for the other guy with the 2000--if you had your manifold heat shield replaced through the recall, better check your hood paint--mine had cracked and Chrysler repainted for me. |

They have some decent forums, although most of them are dedicated to building and modifying for further off road use.... they kind of frown on what they call "mall crawlers", i.e. people who dont take their jeeps off road. The I6 / AW4 (trans) combo is pretty much indestructable as far as the drivetrain is concerned. The problem with them is that they turn into rusty rattle traps, but yours is probably way too new for that. Take care, George

I love my Jeep Cherokee. One of the coolest cars I've ever owned. It's so boxy, ugly, but it's charming. Reliable too!
