Towing a 4Runner

Looking for something to tow behind my motorhome. Anyone know if you can flat tow (4 wheels on the ground) a late 80's early 90's manual transmission 4Runner? I'm thinking put the transfer case in neutral to tow it. I'm also considering an Isuzu Trooper or something similar. Opinions?

I know my Dad had a Land Cruiser that was an 83, i think. He tried towing on all-fours, got about 45 miles out of town, blew his transfer case, even with everything in Neutral. The mechanic siad that it wouldn't have happened if the driveshaft had been pulled. Not sure if this would apply to you. My.02

That's an ugly story. Doesn't look promising.

Yeah, he had to shell out like $1200 for a new TC (from georgia, the only one he could find), only do blow a head gasket like two months later.

check to see if that transfercase locks front and rear driveshafts together when it is in neutral. I know this sounds silly but thats how it works on some jeep cherokee's. I found this out trying to tow one on a dolly.

I have never towed and please check this out but I was told that when you two that the truck should be in 2nd gear to keep the juices flowing. That is for an automatic of course.

It definitely does on a Land Cruiser. Not sure on other Toyota 4x4's.
