Starmark Warranty Question
There is a possibility that I might be able to by a friend's Mercedes which has a Starmark warranty. The question is if he trades it in to an Infiniti dealership and I buy from them (for his tax benifit) will the warranty be voided. I know that if I buy the car directly from him it will transfer. But I think I've been led to believe that if another dealership takes title of it that essentially terminates the Starmark warranty. No guesses please.

Well....
...good question.
From MBUSA.COM (Warranty FAQs): Can I transfer the Extended Limited Warranty coverage? If you sell your Certified Pre-Owned Mercedes-Benz to a private party, its new owner can continue the Extended Limited Warranty coverage. Well, that doesnt answer it. So the next FAQ is: What if I have other warranty questions? Your Mercedes Benz Representative is trained to answer any Pre-Owned Mercedes-Benz questions, including those about the Extended Limited Warranty program. And as a Mercedes-Benz customer, you're never further than a free phone call away from our Customer Assistance Center (1-800-FOR-MERCEDES), with representatives standing by to respond to all types of Mercedes-related warranty questions, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Looks to me like you should make a phone call. Right now, if you want to. (I'd bet the hold time is lower at 0100 though. ) Also - If they say it's transferable via another dealer as you plan to go. I'd ask where that is in writing. Get a black and white copy.

Starmark ends when the car is traded at an MB dealer, in addition to any other type of dealer or 3rd party. The only way to purchase a Starmark car and have the warranty in effect is to purchase it directly from the individual owner. It's quite plainly stated in the Starmark warranty booklet.
So far as I know, most used car warranties are terminated if the car is sold through a dealer. They only survive individual-to-individual sales.

JimB is correct, both with regards to Starmark and 3rd party warranties. I have not been able to determine why warranties are all setup in this manner, but it does seem to be consistent.

Ok this sounds consistant with what I expected. I had said Starmark it actually is a extended new car warranty. My friend indicated to transfer it he had to send some papers to Mercedes with the new owners name on them. But the question is whether Mercedes would check to see if the title passed through a dealer.
If it turns out there is no way to transfer the warranty if he trades it in I will end up paying him the tax he would have gotten for the tradein which amount to about $1700 for a two year Mercedes warranty extension which still seems like money well spent. |
