I'll give money to your cause only if you spend it in my store...
Wow. Did anyone catch this one?
Basically it goes like this Mrs. Bush donated money to benefit Katrina victims, but that money can only be used to buy stuff from her SON'S company. ---> HOUSTON - Former first lady Barbara Bush gave relief money to a hurricane relief fund on the condition that it be spent to buy educational software from her son Neil's company. The chief of staff of former President George H.W. Bush would not disclose the amount earmarked for purchases from Ignite Learning. Since Barbara Bush's gift, the Ignite Learning program has been given to eight public schools with high numbers of Hurricane Katrina evacuees, the Houston Chronicle reported. "Mrs. Bush wanted to do something specifically for education and specifically for the thousands of students flooding into the Houston schools," Jean Becker said Thursday. The money was donated to the Bush-Clinton Houston Hurricane Relief Fund, said Steve Maislin, president of the Greater Houston Community Foundation, which administers the fund. That fund has no connection to the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund, he said. Barbara Bush chose to promote Ignite because she supports her son and has genuine enthusiasm for his company's program, Becker said. Two years ago, the Houston school district board wrestled with conflict of interest concerns over the Ignite program. Neil Bush had helped raise $115,000 for the district's philanthropic fund from donors who insisted the money be spent on his company's software. The district accepted the donations and used them to pay half the costs of new Ignite software, about $10,000 per school. Currently, Houston public schools use 15 Ignite programs and the Houston area has 40 programs, said company president Ken Leonard. Neil Bush founded the Austin-based company in 1999. |

Why is it you refuse to recognize that Mrs. Bush is interested only in the well being of those children.

But we already do that. Why do you think so many corporations support welfare programs? So the poor can spend it at Wallyworld.
Hey I don't care. The amount given out in welfare is at least exactly the amount in GDP growth.

Do you mean welfare to individuals, 'corporate' welfare, or both?
And would you count tax breaks as corporate welfare? By the way, what is our GDP currently?

Here in Oregon, state 'welfare' is not even close to being enough money to live on. If you count the cost of health care then welfare would be considerably higher, as health care is insanely expensive and rising every day.
I know a number of people who work and still receive free health care through Medicaid for their children. If they were to buy it through the company they work for, it would be half or more of their paycheck, leaving them without enough money for basic needs. I work with people who have developmental disabilities and many of them receive money through the federal SSI program, which is social security welfare. I wonder if this counts toward welfare calculations. I imagine it would be a considerable chunk of it if it does. On the other hand, a good friend of mine is a mail man in Rhode Island. On those certain days of the month, he reports, lots of people are home and waiting for the government cheese to come in.... Edit: I will stop hijacking this thread now!

Look, let's say I'm a food distributor and i convince my sources to donate at cost a large amount of food for Katrina victims. Don't you think it would be good and generous if I said you to the victims, "You can buy all the food at cost if you buy it from me?" In other words, those people do not have to buy from the Bush family, they can buy from anybody. But if the want the discount, come to the Bush family's store? What is wrong with you people? Bot |
