E-mail: Dial-up > DSL???

At the small office I work part-time I am trying to get switched over from a dial-up to Verizon DSL. Hardware was no problem and for the most part the applications are working. The problem: we have an e-mail account xxx@surfglobal.net and for awhile need to maintain (client base issues) that as our e-mail address. Incoming mail works correctly yet outgoing I receive a "protocol error 554". I suspect I need to change some settings yet I can't see how we can remain identified as xxx@surfglobal.net if I switch to xxx@verizon.net. I know I'm missing something . . . any help would be greatly appreciated.
Steve

VPOP3 (a feature of QMail) never generates an SMTP error 554. If you are getting an error message from VPOP3 about an error 554, it is because your ISP is reporting the error to VPOP3 and VPOP3 is just passing the message back to you.

The message text following the 554 error (or in the Message Delivery Report in the bounce message) may give more information about the meaning of the error, or you may need to contact your ISP for more details.

All the SMTP Standard (RFC 2821) says about error 554 is:

554 Transaction failed (Or, in the case of a connection-opening response, "No SMTP service here")

Thanks . . . I should have included this stuff is new to me. Basic changes in the application settings I do okay with. If I may, the first issue I cannot get a handle on is, should we be able to use our old e-mail address now that we have switched from dial-up to Verizon's DSL? It seems the obvious answer must be yes since we are receiving mail. Is the ISP blind to the e-mail address both incoming and outgoing? As you can see, babysteps for me.
Thanks
Steve

Quick educated guess.
Verizon is not allowing you Route outgoing mail through them to as ???@Surfglobal.

In Outlook or whatever, you need to setup your outgoing mail server to point to POP3.Surfglobal.net (or whatever the old Outgoing SMTP) server address was.

This is a Spam prevention thing, If I want to spam anounomously(?), I send it out as someone else through a different server. ISPs are locking this down.

Note, I'm no pro with direct ISP e-mail systems, but this should give you the right direction. I would hope Verizion might be able to help a little too.

Thank you. That gives me enough to get moving forward (fingers crossed) tomorrow. I did call Verizon late today for tech support but could barely understand the person at the other end. My time was up so I wanted to get a better grasp on how this works before I get on the phone again. Thanks again.

Steve,

I have the exact same situation. When I had Verizon as the ISP, I wished to maintain my existing compuserve e-mail account.

This can easily be done. However, you must realize that Verizon has to handle all the outgoing mail. You cannot send out any mail via .surfglobal.net.

But, you can, naturally, receive mail from both Verizon and surfglobal.

If you have outlook, the way to setup the accounts is as follows:

For the Verizon account:

The incoming mail server (POP3) will probably read something like "mail.verizon.net"

The outgoing mail server (SMTP) will also read "mail.verizon.net"

Now, for the surfglobal account:

The incoming mail server (POP3) will probably read something like "mail.surfglobal.net". But check with them to find out the name of the mail server.

But, this is the important one........the outgoing mail server on this account will likely be mail.verizon.net. This is the critical difference.

BTW, the assistance you get for Verizon DSL is best characterized as follows:

Anytime. I remember struggling with the identical situation. No help whatsoever from Verizon because they only know how to setup their own e-mail account.

"Compuserve account..........you don't use that anymore.......you have Verizon as your e-mail".

I actually understand why people "go postal"!!
