My house is plumbed for one, but lacks the central unit. I hear they're great and plan to slap down some cash in the near future -- maybe next year (this year is a 40K kitchen remodel that's just starting).

My folks house has a Nutone unit when they built their house in 87'. It's great becuase you don't have to run electrical cords everywhere, the power for the carpet attachment is coiled in the vacuum line and it's not as noisy when you're just dusting surfaces.

I am very pleased with my Electrolux central vacuum. The canister consists of a metal can you dump into a garbage bag (similar to a shop vac). The filter is a washable foam type and the blower is a three stage type. The hose is 30' long which is pleantly long. You will need to pick-up the rooms before vacuuming since it will suck-up small socks and toys.

Our house has one, very nice thing to have. I have no idea what unit it is though, its outa sight and outa mind.
 Something from Home Depot.

I have a central vacuum system by M.D. Manufacturing based in Hollywood, CA...works extremely well...they have been in the built-in vacuum business for over 40 years...it is a small U.S. company that really prides itself on its products...all of their units I believe are made in the good old U.S.A...a lot of luxury homes in California and the rest of the West Coast choose them...great units...

My parent's house has a Beam unit...not sure where that originates.
Whatever the make, every central vac unit I've seen looks like a glorified wet-dry vac. In fact, you could probably mount one in the cellar and it would perform just fine...

remember to install an outlet in the garage for vacuuming the car...most people realize it after everything is fully installed...

Good thought ! I have one installed in the back of my house. ( Detached garage) Plus hot and cold water, compressed air, and dual 120v outlets. All neatly tucked in an access port, that used to be a basement window.

Ours is a Beam love it, would never get a house without one.
Although the workshop isn't plumbed for it, the main garage is, but still use one of those shop vacs with a 20' hose in the garages.
