Yeah, I'd agree with that. I was lucky enough to attend private schools most of my life. These schools were Catholic and I was taught things from that standpoint, which is what my parents wanted. Nowadays it seems like most public school teachers have to concentrate more on whatever politically correct curriculum is in favor at the time rather than what needs to be learned. As long as the students "feel good about themselves" seems to predominate.

Unfortunate.

pxland,

i know teachers have it rough between fighting administration and students..i know my mom teaches at my school. luckily for her she was absent for this assembly and has been for the past few weeks (mono + inner ear virus).

I know its near pointless unless we know what the comment was about..

I asked a friend of mine who read it she said:

Friend[S/N Removed]: Oh something about eating mrs smith out

now i know that that never took place. now if that warrants destruction of his academic career then i don't know.

Slander is when one knowingly spreads, by word of mouth, a malicious or defamatory lie about the victim. (I don't know the proper legal definition, but I'll bet it is close to that). Libel is the same but in print.

In the teacher's case, the slanderous material accused her of an actual crime (if the kid was under-aged) or of violating school policy. If the story had gone around unchallenged it is possible that she could have been arrested for child abuse (at worst) or lost her job (likely) or merely have her reputation ruined.

Since the offending student was not compelled to slander the teacher then we have to assume that it was done maliciously, either for a bit of humor at the expense of the teacher's reputation or in order to hurt the teacher.

In contrast, the reason that the teacher (and school system) pursued the creep who slandered the woman was to protect the woman from the slander.

So put that in the scales of justice and tell me which is worse, a teacher intentionally and maliciously injured by a lie or the perp getting his ass in a sling.

I'll give you a hint what I think: I hate lies and I hate liars. They steal the truth for their own selfish benefit.

I don't see his academic career destroyed...he is set back, but not destroyed...personally, if he is dumb enough to post a comment like that on the internet for everybody to read and think he can get away with it without taking any responsibility, I really don't think handing him a handful of money to go to school is exactly a good idea...

i don disagree with this i believe it should be harsh. these kids are makin stupid decisions. i don't believe in drinking underage. i don't really believe i nn drinking very much at all. anyway

it was also said that if a comment is posted about a teacher (or any thing written saying negative slanderous material towareds a teacher) and it is reported to the poilce...there will be a investgation and the teacher is put on leave (i dont remember how long for but...)

yeah...
also: the comment was posted about a FEMALE teacher. i wish i could find original comment.

It's harsh to say that if you engage in illegal drinking that you'll be suspended from extra-curricular activities? Boy (and I mean that literally), do you have some things to learn about the world.

Quit your griping. Get through that joke known as high school and get a life.

It must have been bad if she is lucky to have mono.

If it was said that he was dining on Mrs. Smith during school hours then that is most definately libel (warning: might not be libel) Saying that two (or one) married teachers got it on at school is no bueno, and could lead to all kinds of physical, emotional, and financial harm.

I think that it only seems that his academic career has been destroyed (if it has it was by himself I might add). Like I said, if he truly was going to be at the top of your class he can go to school somewhere else.

at my school our history/govt teach doesnt voice her feelings, she tells us that she doesnt want to make it like thats how it is and she doesnt want to get it trouble..and she is teaching us like it should be not shoveling down her position on issues to us.....

i miss dodgeball. we stopped playing is because the girl's gym teacher got hit in the head by a ricocheting ball while she was walking throu the court.

How else are kids supposed to learn about social heirarchy? It is obvious that the kids who throw a ball harder and more accurately are therefor better and deserve to date the prom queen when they are older. Not to mention that the girls who throw the ball harder and more accurately will most likely find out that, they too, want to date the prom queen.

Most all of that was for comedic effect. But, at 31, I too miss dodgeball.

I hate to sound like I am on both sides of the fence here but.....

A teacher not being able to provide perspective on history/government is about as useful as a book. If a teacher cannot teach you more than a book can, then what good is the teacher? (most of that came from Good Will Hunting, thank you Ben Afflek!)

I can justify this by adding that I am not talking about feel good curricula, but hard, little known, facts that can help open your eyes to the **** being shoveled you.

you see i am on both sides of the fence, i know most of the staff/faculty and students.

I can understand/appreciate both sides of the argument.
