Oil question

Please don't flame me but I have a question about oil and oil changes.

I changed the oil on my quad (atv) today and noticed a substatial increase in performance. I did switch to synthetic and I know that makes a difference but were talking about a major increase. It starts much easier and gets two wheels lickety split compared to needing a little pull to get in there.

why?

...I find the recommended equivalent synthetic oil is usually lighter than the original petroleum-base oils and people just feel their vehicles become faster/more powerful as a result of having a lighter oil in the engine...even the same weight oil among different oil-brand manufacturers feel different...the difference is usually most apparent among these small high-RPM vehicles as opposed to cars...

Shouldn't you be OUT riding your ATV instead of stuck on this forum? It is FRIDAY!!!

I'm not gonna flame you, but..................

We need numbers not impressions! Put it on a dyno and compare it to the stock numbers. That's the only way to really tell. If the dyno guys snicker when you ask them to test it, tell them that it was suggested to you on Mercedesshop.com. They'll understand. they may still snicker though

Probably placibo affect. I did notice then when I switched the SDL from 15w50 to 5w40 she seemed to spool up a bit faster.

Synthetic is amazing stuff, I remember seeing dyno charts from cars that switched to say Royal Purple or Redline and if I remember correctly they did pick up a hp or so.

I believe that phrase was coined by Billy Jean King. Just before a U.S. Open tennis match she boasted that she "would service her opponents' lickety split". And damned if she didn't!!!

Melissa Manchester and Rosie O'Donnell have reportedly referred to the process on "partners", whatever that means.

But what motor? An ATV is a lot smaller and probably less complex. My question would be on the condition of the oil that was taken out. If the oil was practically goo, it might explain things. I never felt a SOTP increas with any of my ATVs going to synthetics. I even used the wife-o-meter. If she feels different, I look at it closer. She doesn't know what goes into her machine so she has no placebo effects. I ask her how the machine ran. She doesn't even know if I did anything to it before she answers. Kinda of a blind test, if you will.

35 degrees and 3 hours you might have blown some carbon out of the engine. Kinda like a gas Italian Tune Up.

Its a 300SDL so it would be a 603.971. Oil coming out was Mobil 1 15w50 with maybe 3,500 miles on it, in went Delvac 1 5w40.

Thats why I said placibo affect in the first line.

Now if someone were to hook say a Z06 up to a dyno and do runs with say a 0w20 vs a 5w30 oil and see if their are any gains that would be interesting.

synth is lighter as someone said above but it also increases oil pressure; better lubing + less friction = mo powa'

Change it back to conventional oil and see if original performance returns.
