A reason to visit Texas
Visited Alibates Flint Quarries this week:
http://www.nps.gov/alfl/ If you're interested in human history on the continent this is a cool place. Flint has been quarried there for at least 12,500 years. Many Folsom points were from Alibates. The flint has been found as far north as Canada. The visitors center is dreadfully primitive but the guide was a damn good flintnapper.

You're going to have to do a lot better than that to get me to go to Texas

And Louisiana is far worse. Don't come here, either.

Can't say for Louisiana. Only time I was in NOLA was at Mardi Gras and that's not a true test. Got a soft spot in my heart for Texas though. As in most states, there are an awful lot of nice places. West Texas can be a bit dicey, though. Saw a sign on the side of a building at a truck stop that read:
DIESEL FRIED CHICKEN ...those West Texans are tougher than I thought. |

One intriguing fact about eastern New Mexico, the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, southeastern Colorado and southwestern Kansas, is that the area seems pretty inhospitable to us. Towns are tiny, spaced hundreds of miles apart, and aside from a few ranchers, nobody would be there were it not for oil. However, Paleoindians loved the area. Some of the richest archaeological sites in the continent are there. Wouldn't you love to have been there when huge herds of bisons filled the valleys and giant mammoths came charging over hilltops?

I know that as little as 150 years ago, the Big Bend area had a lot more grasses and, the same thing was true for the Llano Estacado. Coronado even called the Llano Estacado, a "Sea of Grass" in the 1540s.
Very different from and probably much more hospitable than the desert it is now.

I bet they had to really watch where they stepped! "Og, did you track bison ***** into the cave again?"

I have a soft spot for Texas alright but it is a damn sight farther south than my heart.

Why are you looking at the camera when there are other things to be looking at? Assuming you are the male in the pic.
