There is something not write about Ol' Forrest's account here. I think the facts have been cut and pasted to fit the concerns of the writer.

The earth can take care of itself (which I think he is actually implying). It doesn't sound like an advocation for someone to purposely kill a few billion people. But an opinion that several billion people will be killed.

Something does seem a bit fishy. I could imagine some whack job saying that but not a room full of scientists giving such remarks a standing ovation.

Having said that, everything the guy said except the final solution bit using Ebola , is not too far off the mark, IMO. I'm convinced there will be a big die off. Either disease, water shortage, or famine -- actually, all three as extreme water shortages will affect the other two -- are going to take a big toll. That and war as people compete for ever scarcer resources.

Unfortunately, I don't see us voluntarily lowering birth rates enough to reverse out of control growth.

I saw him on TV last night. He was pretty adament that he has been misquoted and that the media is just out of control on this one. What he said on the epidemic issue made perfect sense. He said that he wasn't advocating a pandemic, but that given our population levels and density, and the ease of international travel, that if we got a killer bug it would spread like wildfire.

That makes so much sense that it would seem like something terribly mundane to say at a scientific meeting. Not that scientific meetings don't wallow in the mundane--guess where I've been for the past two days and again, tomorrow?

Having been to more than a few meetings of professional ecologists (not to be confused (necessarily) with "environmentalists"), I can affirm that people will often say wacky things to test new ideas on their peers. If this guy were doing that then I would hate to think that some whiney bastard scientist ratted him out. The whole object and reason for science is to test new ideas, not to set policy for the nation. Scientists play their games and society decides, through business and government, whether to bother with those ideas.

It is just plain damned stupid to suggest that scientists NOT test ideas. If that's what the guy was doing. Uh....I wouldn't necessarily vote him into a position of power.

I'm sure it was dumbed down for TV. I think his "controversial" thing was that the earth exceeded sustainable population levels in the mid 80's. Tucker Carlson, that towering intellect, kept saying "but we're sustaining the population now" and the prof kept saying "no we're not, we have famine and epidemics and Africa is a mess and there is a difference between existing and sustaining"

To which Tucker "Big Brain" Carlson would say something bright like, "well if we have too many people who should we kill first"

It was kinda fun to watch to see if the prof's head would explode.

Stewart did for Carlson. I wish to Christ that Stewart had subpoena power.

I hate to acknowledge that I know who Tucker Carlson is.

I heard about that but never saw it. Stewart is quite the fast on his feet kind of guy. It's just short of amazing that such a wide variety of people can come on his show and all of 'em are pleased as punch to be there.

It's a gift of thinking, brainpower, and intangibles that I hope increases in our world.

Recently citizen scientist Forrest Mims told me about a speech he heard at the Texas Academy of Science during which the speaker, a world-renowned ecologist.....

What is a citizen scientist?

Isn't this considered hearsay? Someone told me about a fish he saw caught in a lake. It was a sunfish and about 3 feet across the narrowest point. If he had the entire speech on a tape, it would be different.

Ebola death toll up in DR Congo
BBC

Eleven people have now died in an outbreak of Ebola in central Democratic Republic of Congo, say aid workers.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said one woman died on Sunday, while another man succumbed in Mweka on Christmas Day. MSF is treating 24 other suspected Ebola cases at isolation units in the villages of Kaluamba and Kampungu.

It is monitoring 102 people who may have had contact with the virus. The latest outbreak in Western Kasai province emerged in late November. MSF said there is fear and confusion among local civilians and health staff as rumours circulate of suspected cases or deaths from the disease.

It is the first Ebola outbreak in Africa since February and the fourth in DR Congo since 1976. The highly infectious bleeding fever kills 80% of those it infects and there is no known cure.
