Fungus in the...

Corner of my room... its kind of strange but in the corner of my room there are two mushroom kinda things growing from under the carpet. At first I thought it was dog crap but I went to pick it up with a paper towel and this dust/spores? shot out from it and I backed away and covered my air passages. So I guess they are fungi. What can I do about this? Just pick em up and clorox the carpet or something? Or is there crawling under the house involved or something? Is there a dead cat or something under my room? Anyone have any trouble with this?

Wink

Use Pinesol- dilute in water and scrub the carpet and floor. Make sure the carpet gets good and dry on both sides. Hope this helps.

Fungi cannot grow without water.

You have a water leak somewhere that has soaked into the wood. That portion that has the fungus is going to need replacing because the fungus eats the wood making it structurally unsound. Also, you have created a wonderful environment for termites, cockroaches, silverfish, ants, etc. A whole ecosystem will open before your eyes.

I would check your attic for a roof leak in the proximity of the corner where you found the fungi...water likes to run along walls and down into the house...

You can do lab testing on it. It's pricy and won't really give you any good results. This is becuase fungus molds and such are organic and as a result react differently in the different people they are exposed to. There is no set criteria for determining what an unhealthy exposure is. Think allergic reaction. I've used these guys before http://www.emlab.com/app/main/Welcome.po, but be wary of the multitude of shysters that will tell you you have a mold problem that must be fixed or it will definatly cause health effects.

You've got to find the source of the water intrusion and fix it. Afterwards clean with 10% bleach solution (this will bleach your fabrics) or some off the shelf mold/mildew stuff. If it's in the corner of your room one place to check is condensation forming up in the attic due to no eave venting coupled with poor attic air circulation. It forms up there and runs down the inside wall. Also, check sprinklers outside. Often folks have them shooting up against the outside wall. It causes problems over time.

I think what you are seeing are puffballs...because of the Pacific Northwest's rainy weather, you see a whole bunch of different fungi pop up in the garden...the dust contains spores...they aren't very dangerous...but I wouldn't exactly stick my face into one and inhale at leisure...but it is a pretty common mushroom...I get them all over the garden...

they look like this:

Fungus Among Us

They don't really look like 'shrooms I've ever seen, you can see why I mistook them for turds.

Notice discoloration of carpet.. ugh.

The bubbling paint just above the baseboard looks like it is caused by water coming in through the walls. Is this part of the house underground? Do you have a downspout from the gutters outside in this location that is not extended away from the house?
You're going to need to pull up the carpet and dry things out underneath. You many need to cut out part of the padding and replace it. But it's not worth doing until you determine the source of the water intrusion.
I once saw this happen from a tiny water drip from a failing copper solder joint in the water pipes in the wall.

Your house has water issues. Get it fixed now before Ca. declares it a wetland and seizes your property.

I live in CA, the sociopathic sherpa isn't far off the mark. I wouldn't let anyone know about the teeny mold problem in the house. It can be quite a bear if you have to disclose mold issues when selling a house in CA.

The carpet looks a bit darker in the corner. Bet you have a water problem.
