Braces

Do kid's braces really cost around $5000, or is someone trying to play a fooly on me? I'm still trying to pick my chin up from the floor...

Yeah, thats on the high side. My teeth are pretty good and they wanted like $1200 to correct them. Pfff screw that, I have like 1 tooth slightly out of line I'll live.

Dentists make good money, I know a couple pretty well...

If you want to be a Dr. go into cosmetic dentistry, if your good and open an office hello 7 figure income!

My parents didn't think it was neccesarry. That means that I now have a mouth full of metal as a adult since my jaw had begun dislocating itself. Mine were $4200. I've had them almost two years now and they should come off this summer. WOOHOOO

I have a friend who dropped about $20k in his mouth in his late 40's. When it was done, the dentist said it hadn't turned out quite right and he needed to start over. My friend actually believed the dentist. I told him the dentist's 401k took a hit in the declining stock market.

Or he wanted a larger boat.

I love dentists, they make more money then drug lords, and make smile!

Will the Invisalign system work for you (http://www.invisalign.com/generalapp/us/en/index.jsp)? Much less obtrusive than conventional braces and they worked quite well for my wife. I don't know what they cost. Life's been easier since I stopped checking what she spends money on

I think mine cost about $3,000...but that was 18 year ago!

After reading this thread, I am newly grateful that my parents sprang for it.

Those costs are in the general gap you can expect to pay. I'd recommend Invisalign only if you're worried about aesthetics.

Regarding the individual who put $20k and then was told it "didn't come out right"... sounds as if he was taken. A dentist can use a more expensive material or suggest a tougher technique which would increase the cost.. and that may have happened. That is a large sum of money for an operation on one individual.
