Reel Lawn Mowers

-Anybody else into these things ? good brands ? What to stay away from ?

For some reason, I really want one. I'm not a workout buff, but, between the "no oil/gas to maintain" and "small garage footprint", I kinda dig'em (having not used one regularly before.
I got one (for free big surprise) from a friend at my guard base - hung in her fathers shed for a while - it didnt quite cut everything on the first (or second!) pass - will a new one do better ?

Lastly, I dont think these things are really worth $180 -$270 as some are advertised for...

I have one gathering dust in the basement. it was fine out in Arizona where the grass grew slowly and I had more free time to mow. Because it needs to be mowed often becasue those mowers do not do well with longish grass.

Here in Maine I'd have to do it 2-3 times a week to keep it short enough for the mower to work properly. so I just threw in the towel and got a regular gas mower.

That would be the Brill Luxus and yeah, it's worth it. Think of it as the MB of reel mowers. Made in Germany, heat treated blades that don't need sharpening for (I think) seven years and so light that my wife doesn't complain too much when pushing it

I've had one for about 3 years and am a fan. No screwing around with cords, gas, tuneups ect. Only downside is they don't do much in tall grass so you have to stay on top of it. If we get a lot of rain I'll cut twice a week. Only takes 15-20 minutes though. Get the grass catcher.

They do a Nice Job of cutting grass if they are sharp. Much better then a Rotary as this type actually Cuts the Blades of Grass where as a Rotary whacks the grass and leaves a ragged cut. I had an Attachment for a Gravely which also cut as nice and it was a Sickle Blade-again it actually cut the grass instead of whacking it off. If you put the blades of grass under a Microscope you would see the difference. I would get that one sharpened and use it and also you would get a good workout as a Plus.

Wow... I just came in from cutting the lawn to take a break from the afternoon sun and you guys are talking about lawnmowers! I have that Brill Luxus which you have pictured...works great...but the others are right...you have to make a practice of cutting at least once a week or if it gets too long, it gets a little tiring to push...but not impossible...you may need to make an extra few passes...what I like about that particular model is that it is VERY light...which means carrying it up/down steps, pushing, turning corners, etc. are all very easy...what I usually do is make one pass across the lawn, then make another pass in the perpendicular direction...I guess with an electric/gas mower, one pass is enough...it is good exercise...just use it once a week and think of it as cutting the grass and getting a bit of a work out...that is how I think about it...

I have an old rotary one and even though it takes three or four passes, I don't mind as my lawn is fairly small. If you don't have a huge lawn it's probably better to get one of these push mowers, especially if this model you have a picture of works as well as everyone says.

Maybe you can get a used one on ebay.

There seem to be lots of them popping up in stores around here and they're getting significant attention. I may have to try one...

As much as I love my Lawnboy...not having to worry about gas and tuneups (and oh yeah, environmental pollution) is a bonus!

By the time I finished mowing my lawn with one of those gizmos the grass would be ready to mow where I started.

I am in a serious lawn reduction phase attempting to replace grass with clover but even clover needs a trimming from time to time.

The deer do an OK job on the clover but then I have deer crap all over, when I sell a few of my houses I am going to replace the whole ****** yard with that low mow stuff. I guess it only need a mow every month which works great IMO. I don't care how my back lawn looks if it looks semi green and pricker free I am a happy man.

We have a small yard, our neighbor's grandmother from the "old country" messes with one of thouse.

Give me my 6.5hp Scout, 40 minutes and I'm done.

For a big yard I'd get one of those large 50in cut 30hp walk behind jobs my Uncle has. Freaken sweet, you kind of twist the handle and they go in that direction, variable speed.
