College was the best 8 years of my life.
Is Cerinos Maine still in Milford ? John |
I have a son who will be getting his doctorate in Musical Arts next month. Since he started college, and complained about how busy he was, I have always responded," You are nearly as busy as you think you are, and you will be busier in a few more years. You either learn to handle it, and manage your time, or you die"
Last month the stress must have been getting to him, as he told his mother, " People who don't think I'm busy now are crazy" ( I think that was a reference to me) But I was right, and I will remind him that he thought he was as busy as he could ever be at several points in his collge career, and he managed to be even busier, and he survived. Part of college is learning time management skills, and learning to prioritize various committiments. In all fairness to him, he really is busy. Last week he was offered a 5 or 6 week gig with an orchestra in Mexico. After he learned the details, he declinned as it actually would have cost him money out of his pocket to go. Since then he has picked up 7 new gigs with a New York brass group. Paying gigs are a good thing. |

drinking? let me quote Alfred P Dolittle
The Lord above made liquor for temptation, to see if man could turn away from sin, the Lord above made liquor for temptation BUT! With a little bit of luck, wiith a little bit of luck, when temptation comes you'l give right in! Oh and by the way Hatty, I'm gonna be up in your neck of the woods for a quick trip next weekend. Don't know if I'll be in the SDL or the SL yet. |
Yeah, I hate school.
I went to college for seven years, and I don't think I could attend ever again. In fact, I'm 38, and I still have nightmares about school. I love to read, study, and learn, but not in a classroom environment. |
I was glad to be out of school....I always did well but I hated enviroment. I'm far happier working than sitting in school.

The longer I was in
The longer I was in school, the less certain I seemed to be about most things. By the end of graduate school I was wondering if would ever be certain of anything and whether anybody would ever being willing to pay me enough to live on for all the knowledge I had amassed in school.
I was pretty busy back then supporting a family and going to school full time. Still, I have been busier since. On the other hand, nobody's problems are as bad to me as my own are, and the stress I'm feeling right now is worse that the stress has been or may yet be at any other time. What was the question? |
Other than for long term financial poverty, my decade in school was the best time. It included a kind of freedom that for me didn’t exist before or since. I love learning and found early on that the professors are actually there to help. Once I turned to them for guidance on the course work, not only did I do better academically, but I started to excel in the topics. In my late under-grad time and through grad school, lectures were usually fun.
I’m lucky to work with several good sized groups of highly motivated and well educated folks. I like the folks I work with, like the income and the duties related to the job. Learning is still a part of my daily life. Were it not for what is a largely happy work environment, I’d have long ago given it up to return to school. For many you get to go to school for a while, and then spend the rest of your life working, for what seems only the opportunity to buy and pay for things you could probably live without, if you didn’t feel the need to compensate yourself for the time spent.....working…. At some point I’d like to teach at a CC or U. I was offered this opportunity in the past but couldn’t work out the scheduling.. |

Give me a call if you want to do lunch or something. Sunday I am usualy around all day. Send me a PM and I shoot you my cell number. 1991 560 SEC Cerinos is still around, well under a different name, not sure about who is in control ect. Seems that is the story with a lot of marinas, never quite sure who holds title.:D Anyway about this school thing. Everyone said highschool was the best years of your life. Well I hated highschool every minute of it. I have been out for two years and every time I think about it I am glad I am out, I wouldn't go back for the world. College can be kind of fun, I enjoy the classes and the debate. Its kind of like this forum but in real life.:D Still I am looking forward to being done with it. Prof are usually pretty cool to. I'd rather just work 50 hours a week, it would not only feel like a vacation but be less stressful.:D I work all summer and really its not that bad. |
