I didn't think any of these guys were still alive!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bock%27s_Car

To make a long story short I was talking to a very old Marine at work a couple of weeks ago. He as some amazing war stories but that deserves its own thread, he mentioned his friend. I am kicking myself for forgeting his name, but I do remember he called him the Colonel.

Anyway supposidly he was on that B29!!! I really didn't think any of those guys were still around, my boss has met him before I guess his story is legit.

I would have meet him that day but he was at the doctors office, he has a rare kind of cancer in his arm that the doctors think was caused by radiation. I guess the arm may be lost.

I think he is in his 90's, I'm a big history buff so I would really like to meet this guy.

My folks had a neighbor who was a B17 pilot during WW2. He was a true gentleman, and after my dad died, he took care of my mom. If she had not died, I think they would have married. While my mom was sick, I visited many times in his house. I knew he had flown B17 for the 8th Air Force out of England, and that after the war, until he retired, he was assigned to the Pentagon with some high sercurity clearance.
Imagine my surprise, while reading a book on the electronic espionage during the cold war, to find him mentioned by name! He was engaged in a practice called "ferreting" where the pilot would fly close enough to Soviet installations to cause them to turn on their radar, and even launch fighter interseptors, but not so close as to be shot down. The planes that did this were filled with electronic gear, and technicians who would identify the the various radar frequencies and types, so electronic countermeasures ( jamming) could be developed and tuned to be effective. Many crews were actually lost in these highly dangerous missions. In fact, one of his claims to fame, is that while enroute to an air base on Russians western frontier, his plane developed engine trouble and was delayed in Pearl Harbor to complete repairs. The plane and crew that flew the mission that he could not fly because he was still in Pearl, was shot down and lost. he lived because his plane was grounded.
His name is Jack Parrish. he was one of America's heroes in a secret war that few people ever knew.

Hatterasguy: Please let us know when you meet him, maybe we can start a thread dedicated too these pilots. My dad flew with Lindberg and I didn't find out about it until after he passed away, when we were going through his things and found a book Lindberg had written and signed for my dad.

That is awesome ! Please give us more info!

My grandpa is sending me pics with him and the pilots of the Memphis Belle and Enola Gay. I am researching his aircraft and a nice gent forwarde the serial number. I am also getting a copy of the DSC book with pictures of his crew and plane. They flew 47 missions over Japan including the first Tokyo bombing raid and shot down 14 Zeros Gramps got 7 of them which earned him the Ace designation.

Paste:

Jeff... According to Robert A. Mann's The B-29 Superfortress
A Square 43 (1) was 42-24641 THUNDERHEAD , reclaimed Hickam on 11/10/1948.

A43 42-24641 Thunderhead
survived the war - 40+ missions;

MedMech: My dad worked worked in the flight research dept at the B24 plant at Willow Run in Michigan, in the book by Lindberg "Of Flight and Life," he mentions working on an O2 gauge problem with my dad. I'll scan the photos tomorrow and download them.

I thought B24's we made in Ft Worth. At least I think that is where they were assembled. Seem to recall a story where none of the parts were made there. First plane made by General Dynamics.
